Anyone get off the wait list yet?

Or hoping?

i’m hoping to get off the waitlist, but i haven’t heard anything yet…

I was accepted off the waitlist this afternoon, so it’s definitely active!

I got of the waitlist at like around 9:00 on thursday!

Good news! I’m guessing you also wrote a letter to them and such. Just wondering, were you wait listed anywhere else?

Congratulations to you all.

I actually didn’t personally write them a letter. I submitted my 3rd quarter grades, a counselor recommendation, and an additional teacher recommendation. Also Emory was the only place I was wait listed.

So your going? Congrats the wait list is very selective.

Thanks! And I’m actually not sure yet. It’s between Emory and UVA at this point!

@lexi83 Wow how ironic! Before getting off the Emory Waitlist last week I was planning on going to UVA also,
so now I’m making the same choice as you, UVA vs Emory. Have you made a pro/con list to help with the decision?

@Areed21996 Ha wow that is pretty ironic! I’m actually working on my pro/con list as I’m typing. I love both schools so much so the only thing that’s really setting them apart right now is location and financial aid. What about you?

@Areed21996‌ and @lexi83‌ Follow the money (especially if a large difference). And if you are an avid “traditional media portrayed” college experience, go to UVA. If you really care about size difference (mainly smaller size) and stuff like that, consider Emory I suppose. Also, it probably depends on you guys academic interests. Do you guys have any idea what your academic interests are yet? And do not say a pre-professional track, I mean like a discipline/academic area.

@lexi83 They’re both great schools and it will most likely come down to money for me as well but I’m still waiting on my financial aid package for Emory, did you get yours yet? @bernie12 I totally get what you’re saying on the varied social aspects of the two schools with UVA being your more traditional large but still top-notch public school and Emory as a smaller private school. As for an academic interest I am diverse in my interests in that I’m torn between Neuroscience with the Pre-Med route and Political Science/Journalism with a Pre-Law route.

@Areed21996‌ How about just not have a route? Anyway pros for Emory: Very flexible when it comes to that. I would probably try do both…NBB and the polisci. It’s challenging but doable and pre-law does not have a prescribed path so if you decide that you do want to do med, grad, job, and still want to do law and have a competitive GPA (not super hard to obtain as an NBB major even if you do pre-health reqs. like ochem for example). Weakness: While Atlanta is certainly awesome for aspiring journalists, Emory’s journalism department is phased out if you feel as if you need tons of specific journalism classes (kind of like how those interested in business believe they actually need business classes, even though they don’t…). There are courses that remain and several courses dealing with media but if it is to be your primary focus, you need to get out in Atlanta and do it (which, if you’re driven isn’t too hard. Fox 5 is right “around the corner” and often lets students get involved and CNN is in midtown and I’m sure they offer oppurtunities). In addition, with political science, you have Dr. Kenneth Stein (teaches cross-listed classes with polisci but originates from history) and some others who are awesome mentors. Stein in particular will hook you up if you show great promise in your writing (if he gives an essay or inclass blue book exam, and you score A/A-, he’ll get in touch with you about potential opps. to write professionally, which is good since you’re into journalism). Emory isn’t a particularly bad place to be if you want to write or do journalism in any capacity whether it has the dept. to support it or not. Emory could be good for you depending how big you are into college stereotypes and if you can tolerate not having tons of journalism specific courses. But again, the nice thing about Emory is the flexibility and ease of double majoring because ECAS is ultimately the core (it would be much more difficult if Emory had like a journalism school for example).

Also, I’ve seen people double in chem BS (and plenty of BA’s) and NBB BS so I know for sure Polisci and NBB are doable together and combine two of the best depts. at Emory, but two completely different disciplines. To assure you how common it is for even that to happen, I know 2 people who were biology and NBB majors respectively, who did their honors thesis in philosophy. One is off to med. school (MDPhD at that! Impressive considering the importance of scientific research. Quite a risk he took) this upcoming fall and one is going to Ohio State for a funded masters in agricultural science. These types of stories seem common at Emory, so while all students (especially pre-healths) don’t exude intellectual passion like what you would see at some Ivies, plenty do and it shows in their diverse academic interests, so you won’t be alone and you need not be torn. You can have both, it’s an Emory thing ;)

We also have the IDS (interdisciplinary studies) dept. which can even help you create a project that combines or relates those two interests. It has produced some great students with awesome work.

@Areed21996 No, I did not get my financial aid package yet from Emory so I’m kinda nervous about that. @bernie12 I plan on majoring in psychology with a possible emphasis on neuroscience.

sigh Still praying to get off that wait list!

@heyman27 Good luck! I’m sure you’ll get off the Emory wait list!

@lexi83 Thanks for the support! I know that just sitting here won’t do me good and I’ve already written an email with my new information but I’m trying to think of something else than can maybe help.

@lexi83‌ : You are certainly considering Emory for the right thing. I would strongly consider it for UG psychology (which is much more “science” based than at most schools). It’s pretty tough for a psyche dept. but it is excellent! NBB also offers some amazing courses, especially 301 and the special topics courses. Many of the electives from other depts are amazing as well.

@lexi83 They called you at 9am? Lol
