I thought maybe it was coming out this week for early action applicants, but I am not sure.
My D has heard nothing yet in MASS.

We are in Mass, too. My D heard last week that they are offering her a very generous Presidential Merit scholarship. Very happy!

Congrats! What is the presidential merit scholarship? What were your daughter's stats?

i got 12,500/yr for 4 years but i wont be attending

wow, last year presidential meant 16,000+/yr for 4 years...which is what i got up until the dean called me and offered a full tuition scholarship, i didn't attend however. is hofstra becoming stingier?

i got a 10k/year scholarship

D finally heard on 2/13. Presidential scholarship = 10K per year for 4 years. I guess they are getting stingier!
Biggyboy: What did the Dean say to justify giving you a higher award than previously offered?

im assuming that a committee determines who gets scholarships for up to half-tuition, and then the dean reviews it and determines who gets a full tuition from that list. he didn't say why, but my SAT score alone is a lot higher than the average incoming freshman at hofstra.

Wow. That must have been pretty gratifying, even if you knew you wouldn't attend. My D won't be going unless she gets more than 10k. I may appeal for more than what was offered, don't know if that ever works or if the admissions department basically figures "Be glad you got anything at all!"

yeah it was nice and i got a free t-shirt too!! lol

and that approach will work if your daughter tries to leverage with them..."university X is giving me this much, and i may just attend if i don't get more from hofstra"...this works for many schools.

the other day i got a letter from hofstra dated feb 6'th that said they were taking extra time to look at my app and said i wouldnt know about acceptance until the 28'th ? does this mean anything bad is this like a defferal

Last year my son got a scholarship of 13,000/year for 4 years. That was the presidential scholarship. He was also offered the honors college. The gpa to keep the scholarship was a climbing one. I did not like their financial aid averages. This is from the collegeboard:

Full-time freshman enrollment: 1,764
Number who applied for need-based aid: 1,393
Number who were judged to have need: 1,116
Number who were offered aid: 1,097
Number who had full need met: 160
Average percent of need met: 48%
Average financial aid package: $15,404
Average need-based loan: $2,625
Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $8,338
Average non-need based aid: $6,687
Average indebtedness at graduation: $29,112

They meet financial need on average with 43% grants and 57% loans. I was not comfortable with their financial aid, if my son were to lose his merit scholarship.

does anyone know if they will offer you a merit scholarship even if you didn't send in the FAFSA? hofstra was my safety, and once i got into my top choices i didnt bother with anything else until i found out they were giving me no financial aid!! my SAT score is 21000 with 800 in critical reading, and my GPA is in the low 90's with all AP's and honors classes, is that enough to get a merit shcolarship??

nisky, I have no clue as to whether the fafsa is required for merit money. Why not send it ASAP? I don't know what their parameters are for distributing merit awards, but I would definitely send off the fafsa. IMO, you would get one of their highest merit awards and qualify for their honor's college, but we do not work in admissions. Ask their admissions office about how merit money is distributed.

thanks for your reply northeastmom, i sent out my fafsa today, and so i'm hoping for the best

Oh, great, nisky. I hope that it is still timely, b/c I cannot imagine that you would not get a nice merit package. Haven't other schools offered a merit award to you?

your score should be enough to get you at least presidential merit status.

My son received letter om Monday. He was awarded 16000/year presedential scholarship.

My daughter was admitted to Hofstra in October. An admissions counselor from the University came to her high school and met with interested students. She had completed an application and transcripts etc. were provided by her school. She was told the day of the interview that she was accepted. She received an official letter of acceptance sometime in December. We heard nothing until today when she received two letters. The first was an Honors College invitation; the second was a Presidential Scholarship award..... $16,000 per year for four years. I don't know if the FAFSA is necessary for the scholarship as the letters were both dated January 22 and my husband didn't even fill out the FAFSA form till January 26!
Her stats are:

ACT 31
SAT 2150 CR 660 M 740 WR 750
Rank 16/423
GPA 95.6 unweighted; she has taken all honors and ap classes

I got into the honors program, does that automatically mean I get a scholarship? I haven't received anything regarding financial aid (merit included) yet. I got my acceptance letter on 2/4 and my honors letter on 2/6
