Anyone get this email???

Dear XXXXXXXXX

Based on higher that expected requests for student housing, we currently anticipate a temporary shortage of space within the University’s housing system.

Each year there is an attrition that occurs during the first few weeks of the semester that will result in vacancies within the University’s housing inventory. In order to meet this interim demand for housing the University is currently seeking to secure local hotel space as a temporary assignment measure.

Given your current status as a returning student who is guaranteed housing yet unassigned, we have designated you as a student who may potentially be assigned temporarily to a hotel space. The specific hotel space and the total number of students that will be placed in the hotel has yet to be determined.

This email is intended to begin the dialogue with you so that you have the most recent information available regarding your assignment for the fall. Please review the following information carefully as it may answer your initial questions:

• Your housing assignment within NYU’s housing system is guaranteed.
• Assignments to the hotel are intended to be temporary assignments.
• Students assigned to hotel spaces will have an anticipated check in date of Sunday, September 5. Please note the first day of classes is Tuesday, September 7.
• Hotel rooms will be shared with fellow NYU students only.
• Reassignments from the hotel to an NYU residence hall will be automatic.
• Our Fall 2010 cancellation deadline with accompanying fees has been extended. Students receiving this email will be given the opportunity to cancel without penalty through next Friday, August 13.

In order to best meet the needs of your fellow students, if you do not intend to live on campus this semester, please contact our office immediately.

Specific inquiries regarding your assignment status can be directed to Beth Ader and Dee Soaries at 212-998-4600.

We recognize this may not be welcome news. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are working diligently to provide you with an assignment as soon as we can. You will receive a status update no later than Wednesday, August 11 by email.

Sincerely,
Neil Hanrahan
Associate Director, Housing Services

Wow, I’m not suprised. Given that NYU is always looking to increase their revenue.

What year are you and were you previously assigned a dorm when you entered the lottery system?

I’m transferring as a mid year sophmore from a junior college in LA. I was initially waitlisted then guaranteed non renewable. What I’m concerned about is hotel check in is sept 5. My orientation is sept 2, and welcome week starts august 30 through the 5th. So I’m either missing those events, or my parents have to put me in a hotel in manhattan for a week ( meaning I’m walking to welcome week alone)

If you get stuck and need to secure your own accommodations for the week you could check out rates at Hostels –

[Cheap New York Hostels - Search all Hostels in New York at Hostels.com](http://www.hostels.com/new-york/usa)

Certainly not as ideal as being able to move into NYU housing on 8/30, but if they are not able to accommodate you earlier…

Hope it all works out!

maybe you can call housing and tell them that you are on a flight coming in Aug 30th and you need to secure some type of housing til check in, do they have any recommendations.
may be they can offer you something til that time.

Thanks kat, going to save those links.

Not only did I buy several not refundable round trip tickets, but their scheduled for me to move in on the 30th.

If any of you ate NYU students what would be your take on a transfer, from la, potentially missing welcome week?

I’m excited for college but would be lying if I said I am not intimidated by new York. I’ve even thought about taking classes at UCLA or my JC this semester so I can move in and experience everything traditionally. I’ve got terrible anxiety and the last thing I want is to freak out 3000 miles away from home.

Any thoughts? And thanks again for helping me out

When I say take classes at UCLA or my JC in implying I would wait for spring semester to transfer to NYU so I could have solid housing and such.

Apologies for grammatical errors I’m using my iPhone

imfrickenfoofy,

Sorry to hear of the difficult situation you are in. I am not sure why the school left you to look for a hotel before 9/5/10. Other students are covered by university housing beginning move-in day and for welcome week. Are you or your parents good negotiators? I would make a strong case for your need to bond early with students and get started with others Welcome week and that NYU should pick up the tab if they cannot provide campus housing in time.

I am also wondering if there are other new (preferably transfer) students who can put you up in their room temporarily for Welcome week so you can be with your peers. I am not sure if you can put out a request through this forum or through other channels directly through NYU, letting them know of your special circumstances with much anxiety about starting in a new school so far away from home.

I know my son has a twin aerobed that he will keep in his room for guests. In fact, Founders, his dorm can easily sleep 2-3 guests on the floor. So if you can find people in bigger dorms with floor space, maybe some generous spirited students can offer their space. Because hotels are very expensive, and hostels, while cheaper, can be noisy and difficult to get rest because of the constant going in and out of residents (if you find yourself in a group situation).

If you find someone who will put you up for the week or so, you can PM me and maybe we can arrange for you to use my son’s aerobed during Welcome Week because I know he is not expecting guests. I assume you are a girl, right, otherwise, I would ask my son to approach his roommate for you to possibly stay. Though you are probably better off in a dorm with upperclassmen (women).

GL to you. Really sorry to hear of your circumstances.

P.S. An after-thought, you probably will have to go through NYU channels because I think there is a limit of 3 nights for guests to stay in students’ rooms. So if this option works (that is, you find students agreeable to this), you will likely still have to get permission from some NYU authority.

You should definitely raise a stink with NYU. They had to have made some kind of mistake, since the email calls you a returning student. Don’t miss Welcome Week. I think you’re better off making this transition in the fall when so many students are new.

I would have your parents call someone at student affairs - the number will differ depending on what NYU division you are in. As a transfer student, you really should be at Welcome Week, and I say this as a former Transfer Ambassador and a current Welcome Week Leader. Someone at student affairs can escalate it to someone who might be able to bump you up the list.

It sounds like they have you listed in the computer as a student that was in housing last year and lives in NY, not as a transfer student who is new to NYU. I would deff call them and clarify that you bought a non refundable ticket and you are an out-of-state transfer student (NOT a returning student). This is not acceptable for someone traveling 3,000 miles!!

Evolving – thank you so much for the offer. That is so generous, and I hope I don’t have to resort to such drastic measures. However, I will most certainly keep you in mind. The world needs more people like you.

I’m definitely calling them ASAP tomorrow morning, and explaining my status as a NEW transfer student. I will definitely be calling student affairs (thanks missamericanpie) and see what they say. Thanks again for all your advice everyone!

imfrickenfoofy,

You’re welcome! I also hope you can get your own place, but as I said PM me if something comes up and I can be of assistance.

Do let us know what happens. We want to know NYU will do right by you!
