Today daughter got a letter from MICA telling her that her portfolio had been accepted and is in top 25%. She had it reviewed at NPD last month. The admissions rep who saw her there seemed enthusiastic (I got to watch that one review, because I never get to see her do them), but didn't say anything about acceptance, even though we saw other students having their portfolios accepted by other MICA reps. Because of that, she interpreted his feedback as generally encouraging but that she wasn't at the level they wanted yet.

The letter and the last push for applications due on Monday has me feeling really excited today for my daughter. Anyone else starting to get the good kind of anxious waiting to find out what happens next? Want to share some happy feel-good admissions anticipation stories?

you mean you don’t have to look up what " stasis" is in the dictionary or mull over what the cooper really means by that every waking hours?
did she go see luc tymans yet? offer stands forever!

My D got her acceptance from NHIA already, as they had a Dec deadline for merit work. They had already seen her portfolio at pre-college, so she was good to go there. Along with her acceptance letter, came 3 more scholarships (she also got one for her work at pre-college). She had 8 schools on her short list, and since this was her third choice school, she didn’t have to pay the $ to apply to the other 5. MCAD’s acceptance came in via email yesterday (Monday is their scholarship cut-off), 1 day after they received her portfolio. No word about scholarship $ yet, but the email said “Acceptance letter to follow in mail”. This school vies for 1st place with KCAI, whose deadline was Feb 1 - no word from them yet. Personally I think she’s leaning towards KC, but I told her we have to wait until we everything from each school. So she’s starting to relax a little, knowing she’s in at least 2 places.

bearsanddogs: did they actually use the word “stasis” in a sentence? Could you post the sentence? I’d love to figure out what they could mean by that…

Redbug119: Are you talking about Cooper Union hometest? There’s a prompt that is just one word, “Stasis.” It’s one of the first daughter did. It didn’t seem that hard; she did a drawing depicting a moment of stasis.

I will post them all after deadline, like 23rd, 4th?
I don’t know why but after all these years of spying I feel funny posting details in public while kids are killing themselves.

MCAD is lovely place I heard, I would have gone see there if I had one or two more days.
Heard that the school is huge, city is beautiful, museum is the killer, Ohhh but must be so very very cold very very long time, or I’m just brainwashed by Garrison Keillor
My kid is planing to visit friends from the camp since now over 18 he can buy his own cheap ticket with his money.
If goes well, could be sold for the midwest. (sliver of hope)

Say hello to good folks in KC, let us know how money worked out.

We visited there in April, so it was still pretty chilly. The museum is pretty much what sold her when she came upon a teacher holding class there. She got a chance to talk to the teacher and realized how great it was having a museum right there, same as KC. SAIC right nest to a museum too, but the pass-fail and the less amt of structure (perceived by her anyway) turned her off. They continue to send her trinkets tho - magnets, moleskin notebook, etc.

My portfolio was accepted in an interview on Jan 27th @ SAIC. Flew to Chicago from VT, met w/ an admissions councelor, and went over my portfolio and the details (have been a working filmmaker for the last 7 years, out of school the entire time) of my background.

Got an official letter stating my portfolio was accepted, all my app related bits and pieces are in, now just waiting on hearing the final verdict.

Everything sounds good, but I am still unsure the percentage of “portfolio approved” students that are given admission @ SAIC.

All this while my girlfriend waits to hear if she was admitted into SAIC’s Dual Masters Degree Program in Art History / Arts Admin & Policy.

If we both get in, were going to be very busy and very poor people :)

Yes, it was only a small one 3x5 ", with a large SAIC sticker on the front with her name handwritten in the cover along with some cutesy hamster heart stickers. With the stuff they’ve been sending, it kind of reminded me of the football players being wined and dined by colleges. I remember when they used to hand out cars, etc. She had her portfolio accepted by them too, so with all the stuff they’ve been sending, my guess is that she’d have no trouble getting accepted - at least one would think.

well…I suppose I am just relieved the apps are out the door. I am not excited but anxious at what may be coming in March. I have to admit that after watching DS go through art school applications (portfolio reviews, weird essays, pretentious admissions people, more portfolio reviews, etc.) I am looking forward to having a simply-looking-for-a-good-college kid with an interest in athletics doing apps in 3 years time. I have not found the art school admissions process very reassuring…I think there is a lot of luck, a lot of schmooze, and a lot of BS involved. Perhaps I am just tired but did anyone really find this an uplifting or enjoyable process?

fineartsmajormom: Oh, it drives me crazy. When my son was looking for a very academic LAC, that was easy. I could accurately predict where my son would end up, what aid he would get, all that. With my daughter, I feel like while we’re getting positive feedback, her financial aid situation is a mystery to me. She’s applying to 9 different schools and we just have to cross our fingers that one will give her full aid. I’m just glad it’s nearly over, and maybe that’s making me giddy! :-)

OMG! When the mail is delivered each day, (usually around noon) it’s my job to open small envelopes from schools, because they might be requests for documents and stuff. Daughter needs to know about those before she comes home from school, so she can check on things like transcripts, etc.

So, in today’s mail there’s a small envelope from what we call “SnowyPratt”, aka PrattMWP, and a largish envelope from Otis. I opened the smallish one, and it was an acceptance! Comes with a 7K merit award, which isn’t enough, but still, it’s the first acceptance! (Not counting SAIC, who will accept, but hasn’t sent the letter yet.)

Don’t know about Otis. It’s a sort of safety, because it’s the only school she’s applying to that’s Cal Grant eligibility.

I had to look up PrattMWP, had no idea what you were talking about. Had no idea they had an upstate campus!! What did Otis say? D looked at that school for awhile, but was not sure because of it being in LA.

We had never heard of PrattMWP either, but as a cost-saving option, it’s interesting. And as daughter said, “If they will give me full aid, I will live in the snow for two years, no problem!” She put together the app in about two days, using existing works and essays.

In one of those funny CC moments, the small envelope was an acceptance, and the bigger envelope (from Otis) was a “Here’s how to log on and see the status of your app, and here’s how to submit the portfolio if you haven’t, and here’s about financial aid” packet. So, no acceptance yet from them.

Otis is not a bad fit for my daughter, but she just doesn’t want to live/work in LA. She would also like to go to school further away from home.
