Anyone getting excited about admissions? General *squee* thread!

^^^^ MICA also now is doing a dual BA/BFA degree (Humanistic Studies- they call it).

“I looked to USNWR rating, VCU had lots of them for graduate school. Wash U STL had none.”

^lots of them? none? Do you mean number of grad students, or quality of program?

Also about Cooper… I seem to remember they gave out free supplies of paint and paper. They had a place in the building students could go for them. Am I dreaming? If not, that’s a big savings.

greenwitch- I meant majors in the top rankings for graduate studies.

don’t think Cooper gives out free paint.

My son got his acceptance packet from RISD today. We are all pretty surprised here. Also surprised that they gave FA that was comparable to other schools he was accepted to. Still no word from Pratt on Merit/FA. He is very happy but his head is spinning. He has gotten in everywhere he applied. He has narrowed it down to his top 5. He likes things about each of them. It will be interesting to watch him make this decision. He is a slow decision maker and needs to sleep on things for a while until he “knows”. I am one proud mama tonight.

Congratulations Drae-

Can you summarize where he applied and his final 5? It will give us all something to spin our wheels about!

Good morning! I am at work, I will be working soon I will I will
Congrats Drae family! You’ve done it!!
RISD must have liked little draemon alot if they opened their hidden secret purse.

@Cooper free paint
I don’t think G was dreaming, there is the salvation army sort area my CE kid and friends picks up odds and ends, expired paint and scrap paper. Sometimes teacher gives away stuff, like, dead artist friend’s brush (creep)
The school have relationships with Utrecht and other stores nearby, maybe some free/cheap deals.
If little switters decides to go there, we can get real insight as THE Cooper parent, for we don’t know what happened to Valter kid and loveblue is not yet addicted to the site.
It is really nice after decisions are made and kids started school if we could still hear updates.
Parents tend to talk about their visit day, president’s tie or scarves and area restaurants but this bunch are so in tune for what counts (not only $ but yes $) it will be great source for future art parents if not so much for kids.

We should all thank Trin for starting this support group thread.

thanks to all of you for the information. I am a Chinese parent and this site helped me a lot to know art schools.
D said she is decided to go to Cooper next year. I want her to choose WashU (WashU give her more money, all tuition plus $8000 for national merit finalist).
D think Cooper will position her better for top graduate School study opportunities and …
We never visit Cooper, it is a decision without even see the school.
If attending Coop need R&B and 7$, it is more expensive than WashU. …

Now that my theory is confirmed, Cooper art likes high brain powered kids.
Which is bad as mediocre stats and art, chance is nil nil for rest of us.

Are you in state or in China? Is your D here?
She really should come see it if she could. PM me she could stay at our place if that helps any.
It is not normal school. I would give anything if my kid would be able to go but I am nuts, other people are not especially who with good brain.

I am in State but D request to graduate half year early to learn Chinese traditional art in China. Last weekend she fly back to WashU for her interview. It is very tired to have her fly back again to visit Cooper.
bears and dogs: Thanks for your offer, you are so nice and helpful in this forum. I get a lot help from your post.
BTW, D is not international student.

Then it shouldn’t be much $ difference, since Wash U you’d still need “budget” 4-5K for supply and books. If she is fluent in Chinese either Mandarin or Cantonese, you should be able to find much cheaper housing and food source than that highway robbery of R&B.
She could even walk Chinatown to from Cooper, no subway expences (-$700) or if you’d go out to bigger Chinatown in Flushing, things are so so much cheaper.
COME to New York, one day we can have real noodle party, not the fusion ramen.

I can almost see what kind of work she could do… there were this amazing skilled girl in portfolio thread who wanted to waste her money in Parsons foundation/ fashion.
She is meant to do great things and I love that you are so NOT obsessed with it.
I can learn from you on that, bit too late now though.

But Bears Flushing Chinatown is quite a commute for someone new to the city. My husband commuted from there to the old Stuy for hs and it was a long long trip. The Chinatown in Manhattan is definitely much closer.

I think someone from the Midwest new to NYC would be smarter to do the dorm the first year. I think most kids do that then they make friends and join in groups to rent apartments and that’s much easier for someone not familiar with New York.

Cooper does have an interactive video section but I would recommend a trip back to see it because it’s NYC and it’s vastly different in look and feel from other colleges. Boy I don’t know, I’m kind of in agreement with your daughter about the value of being a Cooper graduate and I did say earlier on somewhere here that I would have to throttle and flog my kid if they got in to Cooper and didn’t go. It’s quite a coup to even get in.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, fly her back to look or just let her go if she’s up for it and you can swing the extra over tuition. It’s really an opportunity of a lifetime.
That’s my advice…bears??? What do you think???

One last thought…have daughter or you could call Cooper or look on their website.
I think I remember mention of additional aid or something for kids who are having trouble swinging the room and board. If money is an issue, you should check with the school about that, they may have some grants etc. I might be wrong, but…anyone else know if there’s any help at Cooper for the additional costs??? Maybe not with the free tuition but…

Another last thought, can that $8,000 national merit be applied to room and board if she goes to Cooper??? I would call Cooper and ask…

I just checked, it looks to me like your national merit scholarship can be applied to room and board so your expenses would be a lot lower then.

Well doublecheck me I might be wrong, looks like it might be tied to colleges at the time you applied. But check it out or maybe someone here knows more…

My kid had the flu that week, took it sick as a dog, missed the cut-off by a few points so I just tore my hair out and moved on…

Switters-

My son applied to Pratt, RISD, Carnegie Mellon, Cal. Coll. of the Arts, Syracuse, U of Cincinatti (DAAP), SUNY Purchase, FIT, SCAD and SAIC. He wants to major in Industrial Design which puts a different spin on things.

I asked him to apply to the NY state schools as financial safeties but they do not have ID programs. When he got his FA/Merit package at Syracuse we realized we could knock the SUNY schools off the list.

He never was interested in applying to SAIC or SCAD even though they have ID. It was me who pushed just in case they gave good aid. I said somewhere else here that I feel I fell for their marketing. At NPD at the last minute I asked him to just go up to SAIC to see what they had to say. They accepted his portfolio on the spot and soon after sent a letter saying if he applied by Dec. 7th they would consider him priority for merit aid. Well the merit aid was nice but not spectacular. So that came off the list. Same with SCAD.

We made the effort to go out to CCA and my son liked it but in the end the Merit Aid and the travel expenses made it too expensive to consider.

So now we are left with Syracuse, CMU, RISD, Pratt (not really sure because they haven’t sent FA/Merit info) and U of C. U of C has a lower overall tuition than the other schools but they did not give much scholarship. It actually comes out a bit more expensive than Syracuse, RISD and Carnegie. I am inclined to take it off the list.

Our EFC is 13k. Syracuse, CMU and RISD all came up with packages that ask us to pay around 2x the EFC. So what we end up with is our son taking out maximum student loans and us splitting the difference between loans and a payment plan throughout the year.

So when I say I am happy with the aid it doesn’t mean this is going to be easy. It just means they made it possible for us to be willing to take on the burden. Sometimes I think I should go back and ask to be considered for a bit more but my work ethic tells me to shoulder it and be grateful for the help we did get. It doesn’t hurt that my son got into some amazing programs and it feels worth the stretch.

I don’t know how to read the results in a way that would be helpful to others. I think what I might surmise for other people is that if you stand a chance of receiving need based aid you should include the bigger universities and maybe RISD. The schools that just give out merit scholarships are not going to be able to come up with enough $ to make it feasible unless your kid is so talented and has won prizes and has a portfolio of work that is already ready to be shown in a gallery. They just don’t have big enough endowments. Maybe MICA straddles the line and comes up with both need and merit (anyone who can comment on this?)

I don’t mean to be so focused on the financial part of this because I know there are many other elements involved but I do so wish for families to be able to solve the puzzle.

someone stop me from lurking !!
drae, you put it nicely. and don’t forget. your kiddie is smart, too, not only talented.

smarty, to bad your H just missed fabulous HS started in Flushing. I think Townsent Harris is better than Sty, like Yale or Williams is better than Harvard sense. then again, he’d missed class with Frank McCourt. (or did he anyway?)
of course nice folks from country should stay in dorm for the first year, and that’s how long you could stay anyway.
I don’t have it here with me but bunch of grants, scholarships are listed in Cooper view book. But they’d give kids money in funky way as everything Cooper do.

I was there sneaking around accepted student day and parents would say
“but you do not have meal plan… what my kid is going to eat?”
" what if he get sick?"
the dean said,
" we eat, we see doctors, do not worry. NYC has those things"
Student panel answered about grant given
" Well, they would give you money or check to buy books, No. we don’t have college book store, we go to Strand or whatever… you know, cheap"

love love love Cooper, long live the cult school !!

WEll the financial piece of it is an interesting part of the puzzle. I was interested to see that you were still asked to come up with 2x EFC. That makes me feel a little better and a little worse. I sort of think that trying to play one school against another in terms of their merit scholarships isn’t going to get us anywhere and jumping through hoops to get considered for extenuating circumstances is also not going to get us anywhere. Like your son, daughter was interested in ID, but is now leaning a bit towards illustration. SUNY Purchase was in state financial safety – they are the only ones (besides RISD) that didn’t offer merit scholarship. So I’m not sure what we will do. Waiting to hear from MICA scholarship competition.

Has anyone else considered deferment for a year to raise money? I am currently unemployed and hope that by the this time next year I’ll be employed and then kid can go to RISD or MICA or wherever - without possibly sweating going through admission process again. I don’t know if this is a better approach to take rather than go to Purchase. Kid is also not yet independent enough (says Mom) to really get by on her own even in a dorm. She will still be 17 when school starts…

wondering…wondering

here I go again. ( I am drawing on Mac and I can tell when new post is up… kill me)
this hoveringmom’s D took year off after skimpy aid from MICA, now gotten in CUNY hi high honors (everything free) since she is brainy and wanted more than art. She doesn’t know me since it was my un-posting period, you can PM her and introduce yourself, and ask general questions how gap year went etc…

Thank you bears and dogs. I take it you are in the city. That post you referred me to had some useful perspective. Just wish I had a money tree for the kid. But you know, she’ll be fine whatever we decide. Life is always full of possibilities.

loveblue: I am going to pm you my phone number. You should call me, I spent the day at Cooper with my S on Friday. He was at the weekend at WUSTL, I think our kids met each other.
