My son applied to Pratt, RISD, Carnegie Mellon, Cal. Coll. of the Arts, Syracuse, U of Cincinatti (DAAP), SUNY Purchase, FIT, SCAD and SAIC. He wants to major in Industrial Design which puts a different spin on things.

I asked him to apply to the NY state schools as financial safeties but they do not have ID programs. When he got his FA/Merit package at Syracuse we realized we could knock the SUNY schools off the list.

He never was interested in applying to SAIC or SCAD even though they have ID. It was me who pushed just in case they gave good aid. I said somewhere else here that I feel I fell for their marketing. At NPD at the last minute I asked him to just go up to SAIC to see what they had to say. They accepted his portfolio on the spot and soon after sent a letter saying if he applied by Dec. 7th they would consider him priority for merit aid. Well the merit aid was nice but not spectacular. So that came off the list. Same with SCAD.

We made the effort to go out to CCA and my son liked it but in the end the Merit Aid and the travel expenses made it too expensive to consider.

So now we are left with Syracuse, CMU, RISD, Pratt (not really sure because they haven’t sent FA/Merit info) and U of C. U of C has a lower overall tuition than the other schools but they did not give much scholarship. It actually comes out a bit more expensive than Syracuse, RISD and Carnegie. I am inclined to take it off the list.

Our EFC is 13k. Syracuse, CMU and RISD all came up with packages that ask us to pay around 2x the EFC. So what we end up with is our son taking out maximum student loans and us splitting the difference between loans and a payment plan throughout the year.

So when I say I am happy with the aid it doesn’t mean this is going to be easy. It just means they made it possible for us to be willing to take on the burden. Sometimes I think I should go back and ask to be considered for a bit more but my work ethic tells me to shoulder it and be grateful for the help we did get. It doesn’t hurt that my son got into some amazing programs and it feels worth the stretch.

I don’t know how to read the results in a way that would be helpful to others. I think what I might surmise for other people is that if you stand a chance of receiving need based aid you should include the bigger universities and maybe RISD. The schools that just give out merit scholarships are not going to be able to come up with enough $ to make it feasible unless your kid is so talented and has won prizes and has a portfolio of work that is already ready to be shown in a gallery. They just don’t have big enough endowments. Maybe MICA straddles the line and comes up with both need and merit (anyone who can comment on this?)

I don’t mean to be so focused on the financial part of this because I know there are many other elements involved but I do so wish for families to be able to solve the puzzle.
