Anyone going in 2017?

Hi there. Has anyone on CC committed to Truman State or is anyone still considering it? If so, what merit scholarships have you received and what other schools were you considering?

Well, I hate to be the only one answering my own post, but I’ll put this information out there for those exploring in the future. Students and parents, look at Truman State.

My son committed to Truman State yesterday. We are quite happy with his decision. I was impressed from our first visit, and I think it will be a great fit for him. It wasn’t an easy decision. I’m glad, though, that he had options. He is a National Merit Finalist. 35 ACT. He had impressive EC’s. He was accepted as well to: Baylor (full-ride plus, but much of his scholarship was tied to a particular major that he isn’t certain he will continue, so that money would be gone), University of Oklahoma (near full-ride), another state university in Missouri (full-ride plus, but the school is not as academically rigorous as Truman), WashU STL (about 35k scholarship, not enough $$). He was wait listed at Harvard and Williams.

We like Truman’s liberal arts approach, it’s rigorous academics, the professors we visited, it’s reputation (even Rhodes, Fulbright Scholars) the beautiful and compact campus, generous merit aid (we’ve preached no debt to him forever), etc., etc. Our son felt comfortable there and it will be a place he can thrive.

The university’s location is a turnoff to some, but we hail in rural Missouri. It will be easy for him to live there. There is plenty to do at Truman and in Kirksville, if not there’s always studying ;).

I don’t post this to brag or boast, but I encourage those searching to look at Truman. It was certainly a pleasant surprise to us that wasn’t even on our map. Research and visiting put it on the map.
