My son will be traveling alone from CA, anyone else going without family? Anyone care to share your impressions pros/cons when you return? I'd be interested in feedback from other prospective students. Thanks!

When my daughter went, there were several candidates who came w/o parents.

I'm heading up there for the Feb 25-26th weekend. My mom is out of town so a family friend will be with me. I'm really excited about the weekend.

You might want to stay at the Babson conference center. It's just a cross-campus walk to Olin. The cost of the room there includes breakfast, which is very goood.

My roommate went to CWE as an orphan (what they call candidates who go to the weekend alone) and had a great time. She stayed at the Babson conference center, which is certainly the most simple place to stay if you need to get to Olin without a car.

Thanks, that's where my son reserved a room. They were very nice on the phone: since he's flying in on the red-eye overnight and will arrive at 6:50am at Logan, they made a note that he'd like to get into a room early (for a nap and freshening-up) and told us it should be no problem since that's their Presidents' Week and their conference center isn't full mid-week. And one of the local cab companies (Wellesley Carriage) will coordinate airport pickup/dropoff and even charge the total to the room, so the student doesn't need to hassle with paying cab fare and only has to pay the single room charge.

chrisd, any suggestions for the excited and uninitiated? What did your daughter most like or dislike about the weekend (and in general about Olin since she's there now)? Maybe I'll start another thread...

"What did your daughter most like or dislike about the weekend (and in general about Olin since she's there now)?"

Hmm. At the end of CWE, my daughter was completely taken by Olin. She had not visited before, and even though she'd been very interested in the school, the visit made a huge impression. She'd been looking for engineering programs that had "hands on" opportuniies from the beginning, somewhere she could do a study abroad, and be with interesting and diverse students, and she found those at Olin. The attitude of friendliness and enthusiasm was quite different from campus visits to other "tech" schools. After CWE, Olin was definitley her first choice.

Likes/dislikes. . . .As anyone will attest to, there are not enough hours in the day for engineering students at any school, and that's true as well at Olin. Maybe more so. During the first year, she wasn't too sure if she liked the very small student population and campus. That doesn't seem to be a concern this year. Even though Olin is very small, there are class scheduling conflicts there just as at any other college. She's been pleased by how faculty are very accessible to students. I guess I'm not too comfortable speaking for her at any length.

I went with her. I was impressed by the weekend, and felt like the school was an excellent "fit" for my daughter.

I'm going to the 25/26 weekend too. w00t!

wOOt!
Ill see you there saturdayoracle!

Re cab companies, I think that Veteran Taxi is less expensive 781-235-8294; also there is an airport shuttle service that is even less if there is only one person traveling.
