Anyone going to LU?

Hi. My name is Courtney, and I will be going to LU as a freshman this fall to major in Music (vocal), and Linguistics, and if at all possible to minor in Spanish. I am from Maine.

Anyone else going to LU this fall as a freshman?

~ Court

I'm going too. Music/theory and government major. I've taken Spanish all through highschool but I want to take German at Lawrence. My main instrument is the oboe and I also play tenor sax, drums and a little guitar.

I live in Cyprus and am a US citizen.

Cool! Where is Cyprus? Sorry. I don't mean to sound ignorant or anything. That is really cool. I have met a few other soon to be LU frosh and many of them are into music. I am not a BM performance major but I do plan to study music. I dont think I want to have music as my career as I plan to be a linguist or do something with linguistics and travelling around the world, but I do want to keep singing. I also want to pick the flute back up. I used to play it.

I can't wait to get more stuff in the mail from LU. I just got a medical form, and a news release form. I am waiting to hear what dorm I am in. My top 3 choices were Kohler, Ormsby, and Sage. What about you? Even though a lot of conservatory kids go in Plantz I don't want to be in that hall because I heard that it is the party dorm. What about you?

Cyprus is a little island in the Mediterranean that Greece and Turkey like to fight over.

Anywho, I will be at Lawrence in the Fall. I'm from Evanston, Illinois and I'm interested in Philosophy, Psychology, and Math. I'm trying to remember what my dorm preferences were. Sage was first; Ormsby was up there; I remember I really didn't want Trevor or Plantz and I wasn't a big fan of the substance free one.

I'm not majoring in music, but I am a jazz guitarist and hope to play a little at Lawrence (lessons and maybe a combo...big band if I'm lucky). Lawrence has some amazing jazz players and I'm looking forward to going there!

Cool. I think I knew that Cyprus was somewhere in the mediterranean. When you said that it definitely rang a bell.

Math is the last thing I would major in. I don't even want to take the required math course, because I can't handle math. I took honor courses in math all through high school, but they were definite stressers and took up a lot of my time and energy. That's because I am pretty horrible at math.

Yeah. My top three were Kohler, Ormsby, and Sage. I didn't like Trever or Plantz. They were my bottom two choices for dorms, because I heard they are party dorms. I guess Plantz would be ok though because there are a lot of conservatory kids there.

Yeah. I am going to major in Linguistics and Music (BA), and minor in Spanish. I might end up changing my major in music to a minor or reversing stuff, I am not sure yet. I def. want to keep singing, and I want to pick the flute back up. I also need to improve my piano skills. I really want to do something with music in my life, but not necessarily as a job. I am not sure yet what my plans are. I think I will figure it out as I go. I mean, I am 18 now, I don't need my entire life plan.

So, do you guys want to study abroad anywhere? I really want to see Italy, France, Spain, and Greece. I also want to go to London. I am crazy! My life won't be over after college so I can travel more when I graduate and get a job or go to grad. school. I definately want to see Europe though.

I really haven't given too much thought to studying abroad. I guess my first goal is to get some sort of general idea for what I want to do. I'm not sure what foreign language I'll take. At this point, I'm thinking either German, Russian, or Greek (I've taken four years of high school Latin).

howdy, i will also be going to lawrence in the fall... I'm not quite sure what i want to major in, probably a science or maybe government, and i think my top three dorms were ormsby, sage, and i can't remember what other one. I play a bit of drum set, but i've never had lessons so i kinda suck. I might take lessons at lawrence though if i could. I run track and i think i will run x-country as well, but that would mean i would have to pack my bags and go to lawrence august 20th. I think if i study abroad i would either go where they speak the language i want to study (i'm not sure what language, maybe german?) or else go to where i can practice my science skills like costa rica.

Ooh. I think you would like Costa Rica. My high school did an exchange program there for language study. I participated. I took AP Spanish this year so they placed me with a family that didnt speak much English at all. I spoke Spanish 24/7. I was only there for two weeks, but my speaking skills imrpoved a lot in that time. So you could pick up Spanish, or any language really, if you study abroad.

What kind of science? Bio, chem, physics, geology?

Yeah. I think LU definitely gives lessons to non majors. And you can participate in ensembles if what I remember what I read correctly. I might take flute lessons, alongside my voice lessons, because I want to pick the instrument back up.

Its nice to meet all of you.

I requested to stay at Plantz. I figured it's close to the Conservatory and all the music majors are there so it should be cool. It's a party dorm? Awesome!

One of the things I want to do when I get to Wisconsin is go to the firing range at the oshkosh gun club or something and shoot some rifles. Everybody here aged 18 goes to the army and gets to do that. I don't want to miss out. Plus of course knowing how to load and fire, as well as keeping and bearing arms is not only an American tradition, part of the bill of rights, but also an obligation of all peace-loving citizens.

I visited Lawrence and Appleton last year and loved it. Loved the culture, had positive culture shock etc. I can't wait to be a citizen of Wisconsin. I love that state, and Feingold is awesome too.

I'm kinda thinking environmental science which is sort of a mix of all the sciences, but arg... I don't want to end up being a "jack of all sciences master of none" kind of person and i don't want to be one of those people that chains themselves to a big tree in the rainforest. I think i'm just going to take courses in all of the different sciences and just major or minor in the one i like the most. Do any of you know when we find out what dorms we are in?

I think we find out in August.

Really?! I thought we would find out in July. Bummer.

Was Lawrence your first choice? It was definitely mine.

i was thinking about carleton college, but i applied to lawrence ED so i guess it was my first choice :) i was also thinking about going to madison or university of minnesota. if my financial aid package wasn't good enough at lawrence i would have probably went to madison.

HEY I GOT MY FRESHMAN STUDIES STUFF IN THE MAIL TODAY! woohoo, though i would have like to know what dorm i'm in. Does it seem weird to you guys that you have to choose what classes you are going to take all by yourself for right now? i want my advisor!

Yeah, I got that in the mail a few days ago. Pretty cool. I like how for the jazz auditions you audition in combos.

What classes are you guys going to sign up for?

At this point I'm thinking:

Calc II
Calc III
Symbolic Logic
Intro to Psych
Intro to Geology
Intro to Religious Studies
Biological Anthropology
and then maybe a jazz group/lessons.

Yep. LU was my favorite as well. If I went anywhere else it probably would have been Beloit or Goucher. I liked Lawrence because it just clicked, and it also has stronger music programs than Beloit and Goucher even though I did like both schools a lot.

I want an advisor too. I think the schedule is different for music students because our classes are not all 6 units, and we have to take 3 theory courses simultaneously.

So next year I plan to take.

30 minute voice lessons all year
Freshman studies (obviously)
The Music Theory curriculum
(theory/fundamentals I - III, Aural Skills I-III, and Sight Singing I-III)
participate in either Women's Choir or Concert Choir
Italian I
Intro. to Spanish Lit. Class
Intro. to Linguistics Class
US. History (Colonies to republic) class

I wanted to fit in more Spanish classes but I couldn't. The ones that I wanted to take didn't fit in my sched.

Oh well.

I also want to know what dorm I am in. Is it August or July when we are supposed to find out?

~ Court

What's in the Freshman Studies package that you received?

Has anyone else gotten it? I'm leaving my home July 7th and won't be back until August 2, I want to make sure I receive this.

I got it I think about a week ago. It has info about Freshman studies (a letter), the Freshman studies guidebook, the first book we are reading for the class, and a reading list. It also contains information about signing up for classes, and a class sign up sheet. If you are doing music there is stuff about chorus, orchestra, band, and jazz band auditions, and music theory and stuff as well. You should probably get it soon. It is pretty important though.

Yeah, I believe you need to send back the form for class selection by July twenty-something.

Courtney could you message me on AIM? It's about the form, I need your help.
