Anyone going to open house? What should I see/do?

Is anyone out there going to Tufts open house this week? Any suggestions on what I should see or do on or near the campus? I visited last summer and loved the campus but the place was pretty dead then. I am interested in theater as an EC with a possible major in history, middle eastern studies, classics or IR.

I believe that you should have gotten a program with things to do. Not sure though. There are going to be a lot of things going on campus outside of the April open house events as well next weekend. If you tell me what kind of things you are interested in I can point you in the right direction.

Oh good for me in the reading part.
The musical theater organization's production of Hair is going up next weekend Thurs-Sat. You should check it out if you are interested in theater. You don't have to be a major to be involved. Let me know if you have any other questions on that. I am really familiar with that program and the extracurriculars associated with it. If you want tickets to Hair, I suggest calling the box office ahead of time as tickets are going really fast.

I would say that you should try to sit in some classes with the understanding that we are late in the semester and just one class might seem disjointed to you. But try to stop in.

Thanks, dreamala.

No, they didn't send out a program. I just got a confirmation e-mail but it was very brief. I think I'll call next week and see if I can get more info.

Thanks for the idea about Hair. I'll try to get a ticket.

I am trying to make a decision between U Chicago, Emory, and Tufts, and am finding it very hard. I took courses at U Chicago last summer, loved the program I was in, the campus and the city.

After visiting the school last week and doing some serious thinking, I am having doubts. I am not sure if Chicago is a match. The campus felt a lot more releaxed in the summer than when I saw it on my most recent visit. I want to have a serious academic challenge but a school with lively EC's is really important to me. I've talked with some great Chicago kids and I know they do things other than study. Yet the general feel of the Chicago campus is more grad centered and very academic, generally pretty intense.

I guess what I really want to know is whether Tufts would have more of that "collegeiate feeling" that I want, livelycampus life, etc. but still have challenging classes and such. By lively campus life, I'm not talking about parties where you get ploughed under, but activities on campus like theater and music and a lot of involvement by a lot of students.

I know the first time I stepped onto the Tufts campus, it felt very comfortable, but that was also the summer. I guess I'm really going to see what kind of vibes I get so that I can decide what school is better for me.

Well. For theater check out the following websites:

and

The theater groups at Tufts are EXTREMELY active and put on 10+ shows a semester. There are dance shows that sell out semester after semester as well as a really active music program. Just walking into the theater builiding you will see all kinds of people hanging out in the box office and hallways. There are tons of ways to get invovled on many comittment levels which I personally found really inviting. Within the theater program you will find many non-majors spanning from engineers to biochem to english (and majors as well).

I found Tufts to be really comfortable as well. The access to Boston and Harvard sq is amazing. Davis sq is developing all the time. Tufts has a lot to do beyond frat type parties. We still respect our academics and work hard at them, but we also love our ECs as you call them. I really liked that everyone works really hard and cares about their classes but it wasn't super competitive the way my high school was.

check out tuftslife.com for a daily list of activities that go on every day. Check out beyond this weekend as it is a long weekend by clicking more events. You can click to next weekend and see all the things going on just campus wide.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

yea im going and i just got the name of the person that im staying overnight with.

I also got an e-mail with the name of the student who's hosting me.

Lol, I'm hosting, and I got the information of the kids I'm hosting and sent them emails :-D

If you guys are interested in what's going on on campus at the times you're visiting, visit www.tuftslife.com (...best...webpage...ever...) and look at the events scheduled for the rest of the week. I didn't see Hair on the schedule, though I still want to see it as I have a bunch of friends from Chamber Singers etc. performing :-D

So I emailed the admissions office to ask some questions about the open house. And they told me they never received my online registration! Which is extremely odd, because I got a welcoming email from my overnighter host. And I registered for both the overnight and the open house on the same registration form. This is ridiculous; I'm flying out tomorrow night and Tufts is telling me they aren't expecting to see me. I adore this school but I've had a less-than-stellar experience with the admissions office over these past couple of months.

Assuming I can still register for the open house and all, I have a question: are we supposed to follow the open house schedule word for word? I want to see some classes, but I don't know if there's a time marked on the open house schedule to let me do that.

Thanks!

day_tripper87,

It's funny because my son had a lot of trouble with things being lost in other admissions offices. Princeton lost his entire file, Brandeis misplaced his references, Brown didn't send him a password, and Rochester couldn't find his SAT scores. The two schools that didn't lose anything and stayed in touch were Tufts and U Chicago. I guess the situation just varies from person to person.

About the agenda for the open house, the only schedule my son got was from his acceptance packet: the pamphlet "April Open House". The schdule that's listed there is pretty open ended. It just says class visits from 9:30 to 2:30 and that students can attend any of the choices that are given in their registration pack. (presumably you get that on campus?) There are different sessions also listed during that same time slot--various student and faculty panels, open house and activity fairs. Presumably you just pick and choose what you want to see at any given time.

Presume correctly. You get a choice to pick and choose so you can see what you like.

Thanks for the ideas. My plane leaves tomorrow morning at 5:30 a.m. That means I have to get up at 3 a.m. If I had any sense I'd be sleeping now but I can't settle down. I have my fingers crossed that this is the last school I'll need to visit.
