I have read alot about OCU, Mpulse, Stagedoor, French Woods, CAP21 etc. but not so much about UARTS. I read info on the website, but looking for personal experiences or helpful input.Thank you!

If you want more information on the program you should PM MichaelNKat as his daughter is currently a MT student at UARTS and she attended the summer program.

My D will be attending the summer program at UARTS for MT in July. She will be coming from CA. We visited UARTS last summer and she loved the school and Philadelphia and really wanted to do the program there to get a taste of what it would be like to be there for college. She wanted to do this program as it is taught by the staff at UARTS who teach MT. She was also interested in a program that was focused on training. She was not as interested in programs that put on a full scale production at the end as she feels she has plenty of opportunities for this at home.

There are so many great summer programs out there that I think you can find one that will focus on what is important for you.

Does anyone know how quickly this fills up? I'm applying to NYU Steinhardt but don't find out until April and this is my 2nd choice

My daughter attended the summer of 2005 and I have posted comments about the program on a thread titled "Pre-College Program" (or some thing like that) which I think is on the 4th page of the UArts sub-forum found under the list of school on the MT main page. In a nut shell, it was a pivotal experience for her. The next summer she attended another MT summer program at another well established and well known school. She was accepted at both UArts and the other school to their BFA program and based on her summer experiences, chose to attend UArts. Its summer program is taught by the regular faculty and offers top notch training and experience. The curriculum includes a mock audition which is very beneficial for those who intend to undergo college auditions.

My S attended the UArts summer program in 2007. He loved it! At the time he was undecided if BFA MT is what he wanted and that program showed him that it was for him. He loved the faculty, the dorms are just ok, and he really liked being in downtown Philly. We went to the end of program show and were impressed with the caliber of students, as well as the facilities, and found the staff to be very interested in getting the students to get the most out of themselves and the program. He eventually was accepted for the BFA MT program but elected to go to another program, mostly for reasons other than the staff/program itself. Based on his experience, I would recommend it as a summer program.

Thank you for your input, everyone is so generous with feedback on these boards. I guess my questions were answered, that UARts Summer Program is centered on training, not solely rehearsing for a performance (which is also training!)...would that be correct?

The program is training oriented. While there is rehearsing for the end of program performance, there is lot of technique based training that occurs. At the end of the program, students are given comprehensive evaluations by all of their instructors noting areas of growth, strengths and weaknesses. When my daughter decided to choose UArts, she did so because of her educational/training experience over the 4 weeks.

Thank you MichaelNKat, I don't post very often, but I read your input all of the time. My daughter is definately looking for more training concentration this summer. This helps alot. Thank you!

I attended last summer and I absolutely LOVED IT! All of the teachers are faculty are from the school, and the amount of growth I saw in myself and everyone else by the end of the summer was amazing! Classes/rehearsals go from 9-5 each day and included Acting, Singing, Singing-Acting (which is a really really cool class), and Dance. Philly is an AWESOME city, and the housing is very very nice. I wouldn't trade my experience at UArts for the world.

Feel free to PM me or post here if you have any more quesitons!

When my D was trying to decide where she wanted to go this coming summer she looked at all of th programs out there and decided on UARTS because of the focus on training. She is very excited about living in Philly for a month and is already planning to spend much of her free time gathering more music in their library!

Does anyone know how quickly the program fills up? My first choice summer program is NYU Steinhardt and we don't find out whether or not we are accepted until at least mid April. Is it impossible to get into UARTS that late?

It may be tough. My impression is that the program fills up earlier than it used to. Best bet is to call the summer program office and ask.
