From the NYU Admissions Blog:

March 2009

For freshmen applicants, March is a "wait and see" month. In the admissions office, we are busy finalizing admissions decisions, and all decisions - offers of admission, denials, and wait list - will be mailed during the last week of March so as to arrive on or about April 1st. All notification for US postal addresses is by mail; we provide admissions decisions electronically only to students outside the United States.

We have also started to send out invitations to various on- and off-campus events to freshman applicants who will be offered admission later this month. For more information on invitations, click here.

Beginning in late March and extending through April, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions hosts a variety of events both on and away from the NYU campus in New York City for freshmen who will receive offers of admission on or about April 1st. We want to answer in advance the two questions we always receive as invitations to these events start to arrive in mailboxes across the country over the next few weeks.

The first question is: "I received an invitation. Does this mean that I will be offered admission to NYU?" The answer to this question is a resounding "Yes!"

The other question we always receive is "I didnt receive an invitation. Does this mean I will not be offered admission to NYU?" The answer to this question is "Not necessarily."

There are several reasons why NOT receiving an invitation - yet - does not automatically mean that you will not be offered admission. First, our admissions process continues through the end of March. While we are in the process of finalizing decisions, we must also begin mailing program invitations so that families can make necessary travel arrangements. In other words, we have to begin mailing invitations before we have finished making admissions decisions. Since at this time we are still actively reviewing applicants and making admissions decisions, not receiving an invitation is in no way an indication of an admissions decision. All applicants will receive official admissions decisions notification on or around April 1st.

So... anyone gotten one of these invitations yet?

Ahhh...I just want to know already!!! I suppose that after this comment, "We have also started to send out invitations to various on- and off-campus events to freshman applicants who will be offered admission later this month", people will start hearing sometime this week??? (Hopefully...)

Eeee, nervous! I want one of those invitations so badly!!! (Haha, I feel like a child desperately searching for a Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory)

Well, us NYers will probably get these invitations the quickest so if I'm lucky enough to get one, I'll let you guys know!

I am an international student and several students from my school have already received their decision by mail. That is, some, but not all students that have applied to NYU.

I received one. Funny, my sister (who goes to NYU now) got a bunch of invites and every time my mom called the admissions office to ask whether that means she is accepted or not, they said no and acted evasive. Can you post the link of where you found that mini article? I am searching it but cannot find it, and neither can I find any sort of "NYU admissions blog."

What did the invitations look like? I have received stuff from NYU too, but they were pretty far back in the year, and I think they were just promotional stuff.

Correction it wasn't actually an invitation, rather something that was like "why you should encourage your child to go to NYU." Sorry about making people nervous haha. I assume that doesn't mean anything (though I mean wouldn't it have to? why would they send something like that unless I was already accepted because its way too late to affect where I apply and would be silly if I was rejected).

It's not the "Student News" packet, is it? I just went digging in my old mail and found a big colorful packet with headlines like "NYU can take you places" and study abroad programs and such. Probably just generic promotion stuff....

We received something like that too AlexE along with several other things addressed to my parents, but I wouldn't take it to mean anything about admissions status.

They specifically have stated on their website that the invitations mean you will be offered admission. They haven't said anything about the information they send to parents.
