My son is going to have an interview in the near future, and I was wondering for any of you who have had one, how it went. What kinds of questions do they ask? He is new to the interview thing so any tips/help you can provide, we would really appreciate it. Thanks.

I interviewed with a really nice admissions officer a few months back. He started off the interview by telling me that he wasn't going to ask any tough/random questions. Everything was pretty straightforward: he asked about my school, teachers, courses, clubs, and outside-of-school interests. We started talking about politics (I know, a major no-no, but my ECs are centered on politics and I want to be a polisci major @ GW), and we discussed the upcoming presidential election for a while. He asked why I am interested in GW, and about my future career possibilities. At the end I asked him a few questions (have some prepared). The whole interview lasted about 40 minutes and it was really relaxed and made me love GW even more.

Just a few tips: have a few questions for the interviewer prepared in advance, and have an answer to the only question that caught me slightly off-guard: "If I had to go back to the admissions committee and say only one thing about you, what would you want me to get across?"

Good luck!

ask them something,i didn't

Always good prior to going into any interview situation, to have some questions prepared (you might not need/get to ask them, but good to be ready for it). And preferably the questions will be in reference to something that is not easily found on the college's website. This will indicate that you are thinking seriously and in-depth about the college. Good luck with the interview process.

My d had one at an event in Boston. It was a mass production scene, done very well. They had about 10 or so alum interviewers in a hotel conference room, and as applicants were signed in, they were taken by the next available interviewer.

Questions were pretty straightforward - about ECs, why GW, favorite class, book you've read lately, have you visited the campus.

They seem very keen on a visit. Luckily, we had visited, and that's part of why my daughter wants to apply - likes the city atmosphere.

For any interview, I'd say a student should have clear what they like about the school, what they've been doing lately, and a couple of questions about the school. And be prepared that your interviewer will probably ask something you don't expect.

I used to work at the admissions office... I agree with the above poster. Your son should definitely know going in why he wants to attend GW, what he likes about the school, why he feels like he'd be a good fit, etc.
