So I found my dorm assignment today online. The school I'll be at historically has housing issues, and with my class being huge, this year is obviously no different. I got put in a lounge that's being temporarily converted into a 3 person dorm room, until they have space in a real room for me. Anyone have any experiences with being in temporary housing at college?

I've never been in that situation, but it happens at my school (even though they built a new dorm that opened my freshman year... whatever).

At least here, the crowded rooms are de-crowded pretty quickly; upperclassmen often transfer dorms or move out at the beginning of the school year, but the move doesn't get processed by the housing office for a week/a few weeks, so for a little while people are living in lounges, or living with three people in a double, or what have you. But, at least here, it usually gets resolved fairly quickly, and it's likely that a crowded freshman would be decrowded during their first semester.

You should see if the dorm/school has a written policy regarding decrowding; it will help clarify the timescale you're looking at for crowding, as well as explicitly outlining the decrowding process.

The school I'm going to apparently has a similar problem...they "ran out of housing." I'm told all the freshmen will be taken care of, but for others, they're going to convert some double rooms into triples. I haven't heard about it, but I don't doubt that they'll do something with some lounges, too.

Yikes.

sometimes schools will also set you up in hotels, which is pretty nice if ya ask me.

If you get stuck in a double room with three people, do they reduce the amount you're expected to pay for room?

I beleave they would.

I think they would. I had an "economy triple" initially and one roommate moved out after two months, so even though there were only two of us we only had to pay for a "regular triple."

uc irvine admitted too many ppl this year n they're offereing nice apartment for cheap price for certain majors. i hope a lot of ppl take the offere since i'm on the waiting list for dorming.

A friend I know had a daughter in the temporary "lounge dorm" situation. Several weeks into the semester, she was notified that a regular dorm room opened up and she moved. Her other lounge roommates were still in the lounge when she left, though.

Turns out it's actually a quad in the lounge. And with nearly every lounge in nearly every dorm in the school being built up, along with many forced triples, I have to wonder if it'll be a permanent situation. This could be an uhh interesting year

Dude triples are the worst possible housing a college student could get

I would love to be in a room for 3 people...assuming the other 2 are hot and wild girls...

the lounge is probably pretty good sized though, so that's a plus.
