Anyone have a waitlist story with a happy ending?

Thanks to all the posters- this is very encouraging news to have in the backs of our minds before we open the mail box (cyber or other) on M10.

Keep good WL stories coming!

FA not often as big a problem as one might think. If someone turns down a spot who has FA, that frees up additional funds for someone on the waitlist who may need it.

I was waitlisted twice for Exeter and got off the waitlist the 2nd time

first time applying for 9th grade (prep), 2nd time applying for 10th grade (lower)

@ seikuu so do you think it’s easier to get in lower year? What were your scores/ECs?

I don’t know if it’s any easier to get in lower year but keep in mind that there are about 200 preps each year, and 50 new lowers.

scores… first year I had a 96% ssat and 2nd year 99%

first year my sole EC was chess, but I wasn’t very good, so 2nd year I just didn’t bother filling out the EC sheet because all the ones I had were too insignificant

I know for a fact that the year I was accepted, a lot of students from asia were accepted (I’m from China) so that might also have been a reason…

hm really? I got a 95 on the ssat and have multiple strong ECs plus good grades, essays, interview etc. I’m thinking the worst thing I’ll be receiving on M10 is a wait list… I don’t want to sound too confident, but it seemed like I had a really strong application.

@preppystylista,
Read the Master List of acceptances from previous years. Find other applicants like yourself and see how well they do. After looking at several lists, I know what to expect M10.

Don’t worry guys. Maybe some of us will get off the WL in April. You never know…

You never know…

A friend’s son got off wait list at Taft. And they needed FA. This was two years ago. I recall when it happened, that it was very late. Close or after April 10.
I think that timing is to be expected–as other candidates who require FA turn down a school, this frees up money to shift elsewhere. When we were making decision with my son last year, we felt it was important to notify the school we were not attending as soon as our decision was made and not drag it out till April 10 if we didn’t have to. It can make or break kids who are on waitlists and needing FA.
Good luck to all on 3/10.

wait can a person who is rejected from PEA get in if theres no waitlisted person? Can a PEA applier BE waitlisted<?

I got wait listed at St. George’s and Milton, still waiting for Deerfield. Don’t think I will be accepted to Deerfield, even though I really want to go. I will be needing a ton of FA and did poorly on my SSAT. Could someone help? What does wait list mean for me?

Female, applying for 10th grade.
I got in the 61% the first time I took the SSAT and the 58% the second.
All A’s. Taking two languages, two sciences, and all the highest level coursed offered.
Come from a public school.
Now a former headmistress at St. George’s… Should I call her?
Play soccer (JV), lax (JV) and golf (hobby). Have an interest in playing squash and the piano.
Won an award at the science fair… Should I call to tell the schools that?
Won the citizenship award, highest GPA and delivered class speech during 8th grade graducation.
Live in a unique area in the US.
Two younger siblings.
Really nice personal recommendations from previous teachers. Math teacher rec good, biology rec good, english maybe not so good rec.
Again, really need FA.

What do you guys think? I need all the help I can get. I would be honored to attend any one of these schools.

WL at PEA and SPS- accept both or go with one? Not sure how to handle…

Accept both. You never know which will offer a spot, so it’s best to take your chances with both.

Hi, my son applied as a freshman last year to Exeter, Andover, Groton, Hotchkiss, Choate and Lawrenceville. He was rejected at Exeter and waitlisted at all of the others. We did get a call within a few days from Groton telling us to hold tight, that he was near the top of the list, and that if there was any movement after the matriculations came in, he’d be in. THAT was encouraging. Not a peep from Lawrenceville. In fact, I thought their letter was the bleakest of all the wait list letters, basically telling us to give up all hope since their list was so long. But, the DAY AFTER acceptances by students were due, an admissions officer called from Lawrenceville saying our son was in. I asked for a few days to think about it, so I could call Groton to find out what was going on. The people at Groton said they saw no movement at all, and that we should accept at L’Ville, which was fine with my son, since he loved it there. Anyway, he went and is loving it! So, don’t give up hope. Plus, you can always re-apply the next year. The other thing is, there are a lot of post grads at these schools and they seem to be having a great time!

hpspringseternal, that is an extremely encouraging story, thank you. (You don’t have to answer this if you don’t want to) Did your son apply for financial aid? Also, did he send L’ville anything else to help increase his chances of getting accepted (i.e. 2nd quarter grades, new leadership roles, a first choice letter, etc.)

I found out that I got waitlisted at a school that has always been my number one, which is Deerfield. I was just wondering about their waitlist and if anyone has any happy stories about it. Could really use some hope because I don’t think I’m going to be able to get off it because first of all I’m a twin, white and I need full FA (or close to it) even though I live in a really, as some might call it, preppy town.
Also how many people do they put on waitlists the letter said that it was a select few, but I’ve heard that they put tons of people on it.

here’s a good story! today my friend told me this about one of her friends
she is currently a senior at a HADES school. on march 10th, she was rejected! the school was her top/only choice, so she did everything she could to get accepted. she got accepted, not even waitlisted, and attended. now, if that can’t give you hope, i dont know what would!

^ hold on-- was she accepted in the same admissions cycle after having appealed her decision (that sounds really… unlikely) or did she just reapply next year?

yes, same admissions cycle. she somehow made the admissions officers really regret not accepting her
