Anyone have any questions?

Hawkswim, I don’t know if you’ll know this, but are invitations to the Honors program mailed separately from the acceptance letter? If there was no mention in your original letter, does that mean you aren’t going to be invited?

According to a friend of mine, you will hear back “much later” if you get it…so I wouldn’t count it out yet…ND probably wants to wait until they see the regular decision applicants first…

That’s what I was hoping! Thanks for your help in answering all these questions! I’m an alum myself, but my info is kind of dated. ;)

Hawkswim09- Can you tell me what your know about the music department? (Choir and Orchestra specifically.) Are they good? What are the facilities like? (practice and performance.) Interested in participating in music within the various Masses on campus. Thanks!

Does anyon go to any other games besides the football games? I watch mens BB on TV and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of students there.

Besides football, basketball and hockey are the only other sports that typically receive a decent draw. For basketball, it really depends on the game. Good Big East matchups or nationally televised games will generally get a lot of people, while the not-so-cool matchups won’t. I haven’t been to basketball this year, but I have been to a few hockey games, and they’re a lot of fun. I’m really excited for hockey next year because the arena atmosphere will be so much better once the new rink is open.

What are guy/girl relations like with the single-sex dorms and parietal rules? Is it harder to make good friends of the opposite gender? Do people date much without many places to go for dates?

My son is applying for RD this spring. Competitive Catholic high school that doesn’t rank. SAT’s >1500. SATII math tests 730, 750. GPS 3.9 4Ap’s - got a 5 in AP cal college board exam. decent extrcor. 2 questions: chances of admittance? how available is work study?

@GOIRISH BEAT MIAMI- I just got in with similar stats, but who knows? I’m sure extracurriculars and writing helped. He’ll have a good chance. Just go for it.

Momdoc – To tryout for the Irish Guard the student has to be a sophomore or older and as Hawk said; no marching or band experience is needed. The people trying out for the Guard report the same time as the band which is before the regular days move in is scheduled.

To Curiosity33, Congratulations and thanks for the words of encourgement!

Thanks, Martyh–we didn’t realize you had to be a sophomore or older. That makes sense–it would probably be a lot to handle as a freshman! Appreciate the information.

I don’t think that Notre Dame is dramatically different from other colleges with respect to “guy/girl relations,” even with single-sex dorms and parietals.

Freshman Orientation (Frosh-O) is very dorm-centric, but it also has many events where boys dorms and girls dorms mingle, so you will definitely meet many people of the opposite gender. Likewise, it’s very common for girls to come over to guys’ dorms to work on homework, party, or just hang out (and vice versa).

I’m confused by what you mean by “without many places to go for dates.” South Bend, while not a huge city, has plenty of wonderful restaurants and other attractions. Of course, “dining hall dates” are also plenty common.

jcold,

I’m also a student at ND and a huge fan of both football and basketball. ND basketball isn’t like football in the fact that ND football could be playing St. Joseph’s High from down the street and sell out and all the students would go, but it is supportive. It’s not going to be like Duke where the student section is absolutely insane and they all go to every game, but it’s very good for big games. I’m only a freshman, but from my experience so far, most of the student section (which only consists of, I’d guess, around 4,000 seats, since not every student buys b-ball tickets) was filled for the opener against Georgia Southern. The rest of the “bad” out of conference games, it was about half-filled, and not very energetic. But against Gonzaga, it was (just about) completely filled, and very loud. I’ve been told most Big East games are like that, as well.

If you were talking about no students being there at yesterday’s game (I watched, and there were literally about 10 students there), it’s because we’re now on break and given the fact that probably 95% of students live at least 1.5 hours away (and many much, much further) from ND and the games over holiday break aren’t part of the ticket package, that’s why there weren’t many people there. You can buy separate tickets for games over break, but like I said, most don’t live anywhere close to South Bend and Stony Brook isn’t exactly a game you go out of your way to buy, even if you are close.

Do you think less casual sex occurs at ND relative to other colleges (since ND is Catholic I thought that might be a possibility)? Or does ND have the same constant partying and hooking-up culture as state/other party schools?

There’s definitely less than at other schools, but it definitely happens.

Do you have stats to back that claim up?

If partying is your thing, you will certainly be able to find people enjoying themselves almost any day of the week. But Notre Dame students are students first, so schoolwork tends to take priority during the school week. Friday/Saturday nights generally see almost everyone out, though.

Thanks, molecular. I just meant without there being too many restaurants on campus and such. I just haven’t seen much of South Bend.

Also, would I be unwise to come to ND if I’m not a huge football fan?

It’s still loads of fun to go to tailgaters and participate in all the campus activities on football weekends even if you’re not a big fan of the sport itself.

sorry, I was at a family outing so I will try to answer everyone’s questions…
