Anyone have any questions?

@XD,

What do you mean what my chances were? Do you mean my credentials? I’m in 10th grade, graduating in 2013 like my location says. :)

Musical theater and dance. All lead roles

@BronxKid,

I don’t think you understand—I have no way of chancing you even if you tell me all your extra-curriculars. Admission depends on a lot of factors and I don’t know you, nor do I know what Choate’s admissions team will think when looking upon your application. Sure, Choate has a great fine arts program, but I am sure there are plenty of brilliant kids out there with lead roles in musical productions who are applying as well.

I do wish you luck though and I hope good news finds you on March 10th. :D

lol thanks. But I really want to get chanced for Choate lol so here you go :D.
1st marking period:
English-90
Math-96
Science-95
Theater-96
Social Studies-99
Extra curriculars:
A Lot of performing arts
Volleyball(really excited bout that, choate is one of the only schools that offer it for males)
and Male leadership

MY recs are outstanding and I have yet to find out my SSAT score

@BronxKid,

Interesting, I play volleyball too. :smiley: What position do you play? Have you talked to our coach? We’ll see how that goes for you I guess. Are you coming in as a freshman? Sophomore?

I will say to you the same thing I say to almost every person who asks me to chance them… You have great grades, and I’m sure you are a very impressive actor. I believe you when you say your recs are outstanding, and I’m confident you’ll have a good SSAT score. This said, most applicants have these qualifications as well and I can’t accurately chance you. You’ll just have to sit tight and wait until March 10th buddy. :)

Here, we don’t really do positions, we rotate positions. We do the 4-2 position, as our coach thinks the 3-3 position is a bit too primitive. I’m applying for freshman year btw. And is it wise to talk to coaches? I never really thought about that lol. I’m a very good server by the way, and i would love if one of the coaches came down to NY to watch our games… sigh Should i get in contact with the coach? Are male volleyball players scarce over there?

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, we do have positions, but each player doesnt have a permanent one

It would be wise to talk with the coach, as well as get in contact with some of the directors of the performing arts. I regret not talking to the soccer and volleyball coaches while applying because they could’ve helped me a lot.

Yes, I know that you have to rotate, but specifically what position do you typically play? Strong-side/weak-side hitter? Setter? Libero even? We don’t have a setter this year…
I’m not sure what volleyball here is like, to be honest, because this is my first year and volleyball starts spring.

Is it too late to contact them at this point? If not, how should i address them? I’m not very familiar with all the terms , but i generally play well on all positions. Whats a setter lol? we dont use the terms since we just rotate. I’m a very strong server though :slight_smile: I have killer upper-hand serves. :D

Ah, I see.

No it’s never too late to contact them. Go to the schools that you are applying to and look up the emails of the directors of the performing arts and emails of the volleyball coaches and just say hi, tell them that you’re interested in their school, etc. etc. Be friendly! You don’t have to make it a big deal, but just tell them that you would like to see yourself performing at that school one day or whatever, and just see how it carries on from there!

And this will help with gaining admission?(just curious) I’m new to the bs world but i’m aware of some people that i believe are “recruited” by coaches to play for the schools.

Exactly right. This is called recruiting.
Most commonly, people that are recruited are recruited for a certain sport, but getting in touch with directors is always good too.
Just take my advice and email some of the directors of the performing arts and see where it takes you… I’m not assuring admission, but leaving a good impression on as many people as possible is important.

I see what you mean :smiley: Well, if I do get into Choate, I look forward to playing volleyball with you! Have you played before?

Yes, I was on my old school’s Varsity team. We were the third strongest international school in Asia. :slight_smile: I’m looking forward to see how I stack up against the players here… It should be fun.

Oh goodness!
I have yet to encounter a competitive opponent. It would be so fun to face you 1vs1 :)

Well you’ll have to get in first. :wink: Again, all the best luck to you!

Anyone else have questions?

Do you have any idea how many current students at Choate are from Colorado?

@mountainhiker,

Sorry, not sure. I do think I met one student from Colorado, but don’t take my word on it.

Anyone else? Anything?
It can be about whatever, doesn’t have to be Choate specific either. :)

Do you meet kids from other boarding schools? Do you have any friends at other boarding schools?
