Anyone have insight/experience regarding admission's view of siblings?

We currently have a sophomore at Vanderbilt and now our younger child (hs junior) is starting to express his desire to attend as well. We have visited several other schools, and will visit more, but I think his heart belongs to Vandy:)

Interestingly, we have noticed that there seem to be LOTS of siblings at the school. Perhaps this is common at all universities, but it makes me wonder (hope) that preference is given to siblings in the admissions process. I know most schools don't assign "legacy" status to siblings but it seems to be the case at Vanderbilt. Any insight??

At the moment, his test scores are not quite up to Vanderbilt standards, but he is working hard and we are hopeful he will be "in range", albeit possibly at the low end. His GPA is also coming along, he has had a strong junior year and attends a very competitive private school.

I have siblings who attended (one actually is a Double Dore and attending professional school there now). When the second one entered, Dean Shain made a point on opening day of talking about the number of siblings in the class (I think it was either 72 or 78, either of which is a fairly strong number). However, he is not longer Dean of Admissions and the number of applicants has increased dramtically. I think it would give you a stronger influence if your younger son is applying ED.

Yes, the applicants keep increasing every year! I haven’t checked the admissions website this year, but I assume this current group of applicants (HS class 2011) has broken yet another record for admission stats. We keep hoping the HS class of 2012 will be smaller!

S2 will certainly apply ED1 if his test scores improve.

If I remember correctly from the Founder Walk speech by Dean Christiansen, the number was about the same for the class of 2013. (Post #2)

When my second child was appying to Vanderbilt last year (his brother also goes there), the admissions counselor (at the “road show”) said without question that having a sibling is a plus. Our younger child applied ED and is now a proud Commodore. Best of luck to you and your son.
