Take the Gourman rankings with a big fat helping of salt.

I think there rankings are good insofar as they identify schools that may be pretty good in a particular subject that you otherwise would have thought of. However, this to me is no pecking order. I would think a degree in biochemistry from Dartmouth, Brown, Duke would be a lot more respected and flexible for future endeavors than one from Oregon State or Iowa State. Similarly, while showing some solid schools for chemical engineering, how USNWR could justify leaving off a place like RPI (which is third in the nation among private schools in producing PhDs in CME behind only MIT and Cornell) or Case Western and instead include NC State or Virginia Tech is beyond me.

undergrad rankings for poli sci and french, for lacs if you please
i'm particularly interested in bryn mawr, wellesley, smith, rutgers, amherst, williams, haverford, vassar, lafayette, boston college, georgetown

^^ just go with the best overall undergraduate program (that fits you obviously) for something like that.

Individual department rankings are rather moot... URochester has like the best poli sci in the country

yeah, but it's numbers based, quantitative, and i want more political theory

Yale is the strongest school nationally for undergraduate polisci, French, English, and biology. And probably chemistry as well.
