Oh no! I still haven't recieved any mail from RPI...

I'm screwed

For those of you who received a leadership scholarship, had you applied for financial aid? My son did not get anything beyond the medal, which surprised us. He is an Eagle Scout with considerable leadership and work experience. Kind of disappointing.

palermo-My D did not apply for financial aid. She received the medal plus leadership $$$. She does not have a ton of leadership stuff. Captain of softball plus scholar/athlete/leader award from our state. We just notified RPI two weeks ago about that award. I think being an Eagle Scout should be enough. I know a lot of my D's friends who are Eagle Scouts and a ton of work is required for that. Might be worth a call to admissions. It seems like they are handing out a lot of money. My D isn't even sure she wants to go to RPI. Good Luck!

Thanks for the information. My son is deciding between RPI and a small liberal arts college. He wasn't too crazy about Troy.

It's not as bad as it seems. There is a lot to do in the area if you are into the outdoors. I'm a little confused; small LAC vs. RPI? Seems a strange mix. For most people it would be one or the other. RPI would be the right place for tech, but really the wrong place for liberal arts. I went there and my D has been accepted, although no word on merit aid so attendence is less likely than other choices.

I was accepted with the $15,000 per year for the medal and an extra $1,900 per year for "Leadership Award". I indicated that I was going to apply for financial aid, but never actually did. I guess you can still win the leadership award anyway because you only have to apply for the need-based types of scholarship.

Palermo - we are in the same boat, we applied financial aid, But the package came in: only medal plus loan. quite disapointing, I called the office, the lady answered the phone said we can appeal.

AKGIRL: Thanks for the feedback on Troy. I did not go on the visit with him so I have no idea what the area is like. He really likes the outdoors and wants to be in a rural area. He still needs to decide whether he wants a liberal arts degree or a heavy duty science/math program. He doesn't plan on going into engineering, so it makes it a little more complex. He wants to major in a science or math, but has no idea what he wants to do after that. He was very impressed with the biology/chemistry facilities at RPI, but the 75% male and Troy are the two definite drawbacks against RPI.

15k Medal Award
1/190, 2060 SAT (700 math, 620 verbal, 740 writing), 790 math iic, 690 bio
Lots of music related ECs and I was sort of hoping for a better merit award. It would have been nice if I had received the leadership scholarship (I was a life scout, band section leader, etc.) I might write them a letter
