^ otc2010. yes, it was me. the email (with the survey in it) stated that we should hear from them before the end of january. i did not get anything so I was a little worried. I think we should wait a little longer because Cal Poly Pomona is usually slow processing papers (due to a high number of applicants). plus, i believe the survey was due beginning of january? well, i hope this “survey” would be like the UC’s admission process with their essays and EC.
I did received the invitation but I unfortunately can’t attend it (im from the Bay Area). I did a civil engineering internship with Caltrans at SFSU and it was really interesting. those type of programs are really useful. May I ask what you do there, at the Open House?

akadavidsmom, really? i don’t think that is only for the admitted students. i have a low gpa and I don’t think i’ll get into CPP. It’s really hard for CE and Arch majors to get in actually, its like applying to a UC. good thing they don’t consider tier 1 and tier 2… well anyway good luck to your sons!

^That Caltrans internship sounds VERY cool. My son lined one up through his high school in CE, too. It sealed the decision. I had read that the Open House was going to be cancelled due to budget cuts and so was surprised by the invite. It does seem a bit different than last year in that they mention student life - that’s the biggest downside for my son, i.e. is down on the campus being more commuter. We are hoping to go, so we can see the housing and investigate what there is for a resident to do. They do have some BEAUTIFUL housing being built, but he wants to know he’ll be happy with the afterhours life. He is sold on their eng - who wouldn’t be 16 in the nation and biggest CE program in the nation.

What we did last year was…
Get a copy of the course flowchart and talk to CE students about their course of study. Pretty sure you can get that off the web site…very handy when comparing other school’s programs.
Attend a lecture given by a CE prof, who was also the major’s advisor. This guy was really great…you’d love to have him - very empowering guy! He spoke about the role and career of a CE. (The ChemE prof used a panelist forum wherein ChemE alum told about their experiences with the program and life after graduating - all were proud and inspiring and you could see all the avenues a ChemE could go in).
Tour the labs wherein students gave presentations or demos on what they were studying. They were all so confident, because they were so knowledgeable. Walking through this new building, $52 million (?), we met several students who were working on assignment projects, ie. They were not there for the event, all were very friendly and promoted the school, including answering specific questions.

oh thank you for the information, otc2010. would you mind giving me more information on the housing (if you go to the open house of course)? i know cal poly pomona is a great school for civil engineering but I always wondered about the housing and student life. i know it seems “dead” there, but i really want to know how exactly.
did your son applied to Cal Poly SLO? this is my first choice but i don’t think i’ll get in both cal poly’s. fortunately, i got in my backup schools already (SJSU - same ranking as CPP for undergraduate engineering & SFSU).

@naixn92 He applied to CPSLO as well - “no determination…” Not a good sign, we feel, since so many got on the waitlist this week. It was his first choice with Davis being second. He is in at his safety, too - CSULB. Congratulations on SJSU and SFSU, I know they are REALLY well ranked!

Yes, I will let you know about the housing if we go. I imagine we’ll plan to drive around a lot to see what’s in the vacinity. I do remember the campus food court was nothing he got excited about - CSULB has all the chains, plus a restaurant right across from the engineering buildings. That made a big impression on him - always thinking about the next meal!

My son got the invitation for Engineering Day today. It said Congratulations, the department of Mechanical Engineering has recommended you for admission…

Apparently he has not formally been accepted yet, but this looks very promising!!

@otc2010, oh me too! still “no determination” for me too… i’m kinda sad though. I applied ED and got deferred to Regular Decision, so being rejected twice by my dream school will really suck. at least he has a safety! i applied to davis too, but i rather go to irvine (i would like to move to socal). anyway good luck to your son!

is the food court at cal poly pomona that bad? oh and is that true that the college’s surroundings aren’t that great/safe? a friend told me that but i’m unsure about it.

@akadavidsmom, i got the mechanical engineering thing too! what does that mean? i applied for civil engineering and the email stated that the department of CE was recommending me to the BSME… it even said “congratulations”… does that mean i have a high chance to get in? i rather major in aerospace actually…

^Personally, I think it means that they are in. It’s not “official” yet, but I don’t think they would say, “Congratulations! You MIGHT be getting in…” lol. It sounded like the department had accepted him, forwarded it to admissions and now admissions will notify him of his acceptance. I’m holding off saying anything, just in case, but I’m pretty sure he’s in.

yay! wait, did your son applied for civil engineering? or ME? i applied for CE and they recommended me to the ME department, well that is what i saw in the email.

So anyone applied for Landscape & Architecture Design program?? Everyone talks about the Archtecture program being super hard to get accepted - However Landscape Arch & design states it is not an impacted program…transfer student waiting to hear whats up?

My son received the “congratulations email”, we are guessing that the BSME is a typo as it was signed by the dean of CE. I think the dean’s secretary is probably rushed and stressed out. We are taking it as an acceptance with a small formality, so we celebrated - especially since he got rejected to SLO today. It does seem like the two campuses collaborate, which is good.

@naixn92 - There is a crime report for each state school campus that you can find on the school’s web site. I was pretty surprised that the statistics were not higher as it isn’t a great area. I think I compared it to UCR when I read it and drew that conclusion. I want to see how close the dorms are to campus, etc. And, yes the food was mediocre.

CSULB, having just announced FTF need to live on-campus, announced that the library will be open 7 days a week. Many of their eateries aren’t open on weekends now. We plan to ask if this will be true for CPP. I never planned on a car for my son, so that would be a key thing.

We’re definitely going to the open house again - now that he’s “in”, we might as well see what’s changed in a year’s time.

@otc2010, are you sure its not for BSME? i think we got “deferred” from the CE programs to ME (second choice major?) it would be so great to get into the CE at cal poly pomona though! i did got rejected from Cal Poly SLO as well… sad.

Thank you for the info. i am sure i will not go to CSULB, even if accepted. i even wondered why i applied there. its just not fit to me.

well, keep me up to date! thanks a lot @otc2010!
