Anyone here ever missed a Final exam for a reason other than an emergency?

If so, what did you end up doing, and what ended up happening (e.g. your professor allowed you a make-up exam; gave you an alternative assignment such as a 10-page paper, etc.)?

I missed a final for a class that met once-a-week this quarter. I've already e-mailed my professor why I missed (the reason: Because the class syllabus, which listed the final date in two different places, had in one of those places the date of Friday, Dec. 8. It turns out that Friday is actually Dec. 9, and I happened to read this earlier in the quarter when I was planning out and marking my calendar for the quarter -- I penciled the final on Friday, overlooking the discrepancy.
The other place in the syllabus that the date was mentioned did say Thursday, Dec. 8...I'm hoping I'll be forgiven.

What are any of your stories?

I knew people that missed finals. They got F’s.

This girl walked into my biochem final with perfect clothing, makeup, and heels, and gave a little cough in front of my professor and said she was too sick to take the exam. He let her reschedule.

That was before I scolded him, in private, after the exam. (He was also my advisor)

Astrina, was that Dr. Hoffman? haha.

Guys any suggestions for me on what to do, or what you think will end up happening? (astrina what was the professor’s reaction to your scolding of his action?)

You email the professor. You either end up taking the final and getting your grade, or you can’t and have to retake the class. I don’t think there’s much else you can do or ask for, considering final grades are due soon. If you haven’t taken any action already, it’s likely the longer you wait the slimmer your chances.

Haha yeah, it was Alex’s class. He took my [peeved] opinion well I think; it was his first time teaching undergrads and I think he didn’t know the lengths to which some people would go to avoid taking an exam.

Anyway, to the OP – looks like you did the best you could already, which was to email the professor ASAP and explain your situation. Have you heard back yet? Grades were due to the registrar yesterday, so if the professor’s been silent during this time you’re basically out of luck. But don’t worry, this was just one occurrence (right?). Everyone’s allowed a hiccup here and there. It’s not going to mess up your chances for anything post-grad. If you need to retake this class, make sure you excel at it the second time around.

Thanks so much guys – I heard back and have been granted mercy aka a make-up exam to be taken tomorrow. I’m traveling back to campus (I’m on the Amtrak train right now, they now have WiFi!) today, an 8-hour train ride.

Btw astrina out of curiosity how’d you know about yesterday’s registrar grade date, you taking some distance classes from NYC?! Oh and could you also expand on how even if one were to get one F it wouldn’t mess up chances for anything post-grad  (But really I wouldn’t have thought this.)

Whoops, I meant grades were due to the department by Monday. Grades are then processed and sent to the registrar by the end of Tuesday. I’ve known this since my UCSD days when I walked in on the person entering grades for chemistry and he told me to shoo.

But glad to hear that things worked out for you. As for bad grades not messing you up, the simplest reasoning is that ***** happens to everyone. None of my grad programs questioned my NP nor my handful of C-minuses since I had sufficiently impressed them in other areas. Oyama will tell you that his first year of college was rough. The occasional mistake isn’t going to screw you up forever (unless it’s a felony or something).
