if so, what kind of mentality do you have when you play?

i've been playing for a while, but i feel as if there's something hindering me from getting to the next level. i've never had formal instruction, so i've just gotten better by playing and formulating strategies. ive taken out some books on openings and strategy, though to help.

I'm ok. Since I'm generally better than the people I play against, I usually go for Scholar's mate then if it doesn't work just trade like crazy and get down to the end quick where I know I can squirrel out a win.

Yes, I am good. Won quite a bit of awards and coach some too.

You have to always have to have a serious mentality. One thing you may not be doing is playing through tons of games. Play through BOTH your wins and losses (I know it hurts). Also the more you play the better you will tend to get.
One thing you have to realize is that you should start at the endgame. Really learn the intricacies of the endgame. One you learn the endgame, your chess playing skill really increase by magnitudes. In free time always do some quick tactic puzzles to keep your mind sharp.
Play on ICC!! Great tool to get better.
Lastly, I am sure you already do this, but every move, quickly scan for any checks and captures, to ensure their is not some crazy tactic hidden somewhere.
