Can anyone here give me their experiences of taking honors classes? Would anyone here recommend joining the honors program? Is it worth it? Can anyone share their experiences with me? Thanks in advance

so does anybody want to give me some feedback or are the honor students all busy studying right now. haha

There are lots and lots of threads about the honors program, you might get a good picture by going through those.

No one can really tell you whether or not it's worth it. If priority registration and graduating with honors is important to you, it will probably be worth it. If you don't really care, then there isn't much point.

Every class is different. My honors classes haven't been much more difficult than non-honors courses. However, I don't need to take very many b/c I'm a transfer and so I don't have a wide variety under my belt. Usually they just require an extra project or more reading.

would graduating with honors look better in a medical school application?

are u a incoming freshman, because if u are im about to burst your bubble. Your probably not going through four years here with a 4.0 especially if u think your doin pre-med. Hope u prove me wrong but every one has that attitude that they can work this school, youll find out sleeping and not going to class feels alot better than studying. Heres my advice on how to "beat the system" like i did in high school, take a bunch of easy GE's stay away from GE clusters they are absolute garbage. Maintain that 3.5 and when your about to graduate walk into the honors office and fill out your application, they dont care when u became honors so why not wait till the end and avoid the hard work. That's my plan but i havent checked if there is a unit limit when u cant apply if there is then im screwed but its all gravy playa

Oh yeah if taken some honors classes those kids **** me off they think they got their whole life planned out. You hear crap like im going to be a lawyer or a doctor and change the world, im going to end hunger and stop war. Im just trying to coast through here get my degree and work in my cubicle, im gonna give u the greatest piece of advice here: "Don't have too lofty expectations because if u keep them low then you cant be dissapointed" That quote is going down on my tomb i think i might chage my major to english after writing this riveting thread

i suck at spelling but that doesnt matter in english its the content that counts playas

As a matter of fact, I am also a transfers student but i haven't even been admitted yet (07' transfer student). Allie, you seem like you know quite a lot about the honors program. You said its not as difficult since your a transfer student and also that you don't have to do as much work as an incoming freshman- can you elaborate on this?

sazagbruin,

You're really uplifting, you know that?

By the way, you can't just enter honors before you graduate and get a 3.5 with the hopes of getting the certification. You have to complete the honors units in order to get the honors status upon graduation. Otherwise, you've accomplished nothing but losing out on a few years of having priority registration.

What's so bad about actually having some goals in life and sticking to them? You know, some people actually do get accepted to med and law school.

aznhyboi87,

If you did a TAP or some sort of honors program at your CC, then finishing honors at UCLA is fairly simple (since you can transfer over 8 of those units). However, if not, then it's actually about the same as an incoming freshman.

you know what i mean uclari im not saying people dont go to lawschool or med school, what im saying is some people are a little too confident about how everything is gonna fall in place. thats what im saying dont misquote me and pull my quotes out of context playa

and since u know alot about this subject do u know what the unit limit is before honors apps start, im not trying to be mean or anything im serious this time thanks playa

I tend to find that many of those who do actually have some sort of plan actually have everything fall into place eventually.

What do you mean by "what the unit limit is before honors apps start"?

After next semester, I will have 18 honors semester units done through the tap program and that is pretty much it. I understand you need 28 honor units in order to graduate from UCLA with honors. Will this be like at ccc when the honors courses can also satisfy your required courses that you need to take in order to graduate in that major or are they courses added upon that?

Here's a link to the requirements page at UCLA:

And yes, the units can be used to satisfy both.

Thank you very much, you have been very helpful UCLARI!

i am a freshman who's interested in honors but not in it currently. i'm pretty much taking my cluster so i can get honors credit. if i don't end up w/ a 3.5 or more for the fall quarter 2007, is taking the cluster not worth it? is it a cumulative gpa they consider?

when are all of the possible times to apply?

thanks, i can't seem to find this info in the college honors website.

well Cluster is worth it in that you also get your Writing II knocked out, and 15 honors credit whenever you are admitted into the program. Whether you'll be admitteed next quarter or during your junior year, the honors credit that you have will be counted. Cluster also gives you priority enrollment. Speaking of prioity enrollment, if u plan to sign up for the honors orientation, make sure you do one of the early ones (they do fill up quickly) so that you will officially be in the program before the enrollment appointments for spring 08 are out. Yeah, they consider cumulative GPA. The honors counselors are awful most of the time btw... but the way the program is set up, it's really flexible in terms of satisfying the honors credit requirements (i.e. SRP & honors seminars count) Hope that helps

another perk of honors is that it's REALLY easy to petition for extra units. as in, walk to the honors office, hand over your bruincard, tell them how many units you want, and done. no window 1/2 all that business. small perk, but everything helps.
also, the honors collegium courses you'll be taking can be extremely interesting! it gets you out of the major classes and GE's, into something that actually interests you, interests the professor, and is in a small class setting so it's actually engaging. check them out!

if i dont get an A- or above in my ge clst, i won't have the min gpa of 3.5 to apply to honors? when do most students apply who didn't get into ucla as honors? i guess i dont need to worry about anything if i don't do well in my ge clst..
