Currently, I am a freshman and I am very interest in economics. I wonder are AP Macro and Micro classes hard enough with a lot of materials to need one whole year to study them ? I am planning to take Micro during the summer of 10th grade and Macro in 11th grade so I have one extra slot for my junior year for another AP class. Are these two economics classes easy enough to take them over the summer and still get 5 ?

Okay, first off high school is NOT a rat race to try and fit in as many AP classes as you can. I took a grand total of 1 AP class that I had no real interest in and regretted it immensely (but I loved all the other AP classes that I did have an interest in and it made my year nice and happy). If you are interested in AP Econ, then take it as a class! You’ll enjoy yourself more. High school sucks when you don’t enjoy it.

I mention this because, though I’m only a Junior, most of the seniors I know take the class. And their opinions of the class can be summed up pretty easily: they like the subject and like the class or they hate the subject and hate the class. It doesn’t seem “hard” per se. There’s just a lot of information you need to know. Learning this information is extremely painful if you don’t find it interesting. And this doesn’t apply to just AP Econ…it applies to every AP class.

You do find it interesting, so you’ll probably be fine whenever you take it, but you should take it over the year. The OTHER classes you’ll inevitably take to fill your schedule with when you push AP Econ off to the side might not be easy to deal with.

Oh, and at my school AP Econ is a one year class. You take Macro first semester and Micro second semester or Micro first semester and Macro second semester, I can’t remember. The point is that you don’t need the full year to learn the material, but then again this was in class, not self studied. I’d still say it’s doable though, I’ve read chapters of the textbook for fun (I’m taking it next year, wanted to see what the material was like), and there’s nothing too obtuse in there.

As for scores, for Macro/Micro there were (last year)…55/48 5s, 16/24 4s, 6/6 3s, 4/2 2s and 0 1s. Taking both in one year certainly doesn’t seem to be hurting the students.

Well JustASomeone, I wanted to ask if it is possible to take AP econ during the summer because IB does not allow me to take a lot of classes I am interest in so I have to save time by taking easy classes over the summer and get more time for harder AP courses that interest me.

Ah, you’re taking IB as well. You probably should have mentioned that. Well, I answered your question above - yes it’s possible.

You could study both in one summer. The challenge for you will be finding the time to review before the exams in May, since IB is pretty intensive.

I’m a freshman taking AP Macro and self-studying AP Micro. I’m the only freshman taking it at my school, but I love the class (undoubtably my favorite class) and find it relatively easy.
