Has anyone heard back as to whether or not they are in the Honors program? If you were, would you mind posting stats?

Well, they don't immediately admit you to the Honors program. You apply to be in the Honors program, and they pick the best 60 that apply.

I got an invitation to apply in the mail yesterday. I'll give you my stats:

Class rank: 3

SAT: 2100/1410

APs:
Junior- AP US History, AP Bio
Senior- AP Lit and Comp, AP Gov, AP Chem

Extracurriculars:

National Honor Society - 11, 12

Other:

My S's application just arrived in today's mail. They used some formula to convert his ACT score into a math/verbal SAT score (his scores - math 32, english 35, writing 31), and he is taking all honors/AP, plus 3 time all state choir, drama club 4 yrs, MAO, spanish, NHS, student ministry, senior board, etc. Also, 4yrs district and state rally for stuff like spanish, math, english. Going for calculus this year. Did a mission trip to Hondurus last summer.

how long did it take for the honors app to come after your acceptance letters?

Two or three weeks. He was accepted the beginning of January.

Cool. I emailed the chair of Honors and he mentioned nothing about applying for it OR being invited to apply so imagine my suprise lol. But he was very helpful and said he'd love to meet with me to talk about it if I ever came to visit campus. On that note does anyone think that the campus is outdated? My friend visited and said it was pretty but hadn't been updated in a while

I was wondering what the benefits of being in the Honors program at Ithaca are. At some schools you get more scholarship money and early registration for classes. I know at Ithaca there is Honors housing but what other perks are there?

Just thought I'd bump this to the top...

My D was invited to apply for the Honors program and her application needed to be postmarked by March 1. Has anyone else who applied heard anything yet?

My D sent in her application and got an email yesterday stating that everything was received and all apps are in review. They said notification would be late April, early May. They also said to stop by if you are attending one of the Ithaca Today sessions.

Thank you for the information. I hope they notify the students of their Honors program decision before our kids have to finalize their college selection.

Another strike against Ithaca. They didn't invite my D for Honors. I guess 95th percentile for SAT's, 4.0 UW, and 3rd in her class along with multiple EC's is just not good enough for Ithaca Honors.

It does bother me that they are not notifying the kids of Honor's decision until so late. That could be a deciding factor on a college for some kids. But yet it could come after the deposit and decision need to be made. Not a good thing.

I was there for Ithaca's accepted students program and just stopped in at the Honors Reception for a second. It sounds like 300 people were invited to apply, and 60 will be accepted in. The dean also said that the first letters will be going out next week, but again, not all will be about before May 1 which he said is "the nature of the beast" or something to that effect. He was very odd, was anyone else there?

The students I talked to seem nice, yet the time commitment is so huge for the program that I would almost rather NOT be selected. One course EVERY semester is devoted to Honors, and as a Journalism major in the Park school, almost none of the courses would apply to my major and would instead just fill my elective spots. Good luck to everyone, but I wouldn't be too heartbroken about not getting in personally! :)

Jlee 28. we weren't able to attend the acccepted students' program. Any other impressions of the school/campus/student body you can provide?

No problem! Sorry that I am late in responding.

I can give you my overall impression, but I honestly think that it is different for every person. I was VERY impressed with the school. I need to decide between Boston University and Ithaca, and was almost ready to commit to BU before visiting Ithaca again. I had visited last summer, where I was also very impressed.

As far as the school in general, it might be better for you to ask more specific questions. As someone going into the Park school, I mostly got information about that. If you're interested, Park is VERY impressive. I can tell you more about how excited the dean was and the students, but I have no idea if the experience would be different within another department. The school seems to be improving every year in a way that seems really exciting. I think the size is pretty perfect at 6000 students, personally, because it's big enough that you aren't seeing EVERYONE you know, but small enough that you can easily meet up with people you've met before without getting lost. But you can ask me more specific questions if you're interested. Also, because Cornell is right there Ithaca students can actually use their libraries! So the resources are great. I think the best thing is the alumni connection...they even have a mentoring program where seniors can connect with a graduate in their field. The alumni come back to campus all the time...and Ithaca's reputation is becoming so much better that on interships people seek out IC students.

The campus is GORGEOUS. I've heard the buildings are outdated by some, but I really don't think it's that bad. The cafeteria was cute...and I liked the food. You can see the Fingerlakes from almost anywhere on campus and the dorms were pretty decent too. The downtown is adorable...every little restaurant is unique and the shops are small and eccentric but a lot of fun to explore.

The most impressive thing though is the people. Both times I was there I was amazed at how truly friendly everybody was. I talked to the newspaper advisor, maybe more than 30 students, and some professors and they were all sweet and caring. The prof (within my major!) even answered questions while we were eating lunch...like why I should go there over BU. They have some great abroad programs too, and people were really helpful about that. There isn't a ton of diversity, but there's a decent amount so that you can meet people from all over the place. They split us up (parents and kids) and had kids ask whatever they wanted of two really awesome students who were completely honest. The community is great. We were walking downtown and stopped at this coffeeshop where this girl was working. She asked if we were visiting a college, and we said yes, and she said she goes to IC and LOVES IT. She wasn't even being paid to tell us that! The students in the dorms who weren't there to answer questions, still did and were amazingly sweet. I have a great impression.

Sorry that's so long! Again, ask any further questions :) And keep in mind, I also visited Northeastern's accepted students day and all I could do was compare it to Ithaca's! haha.
