<p>I'm in Cog Sci 1 and made a big 1st year mistake. I read the syllabus and it said that sections are not meeting for the first week. I thought that "sections" was just another name for lectures/labs/discussions. As a result, I missed the first lecture (on Thursday).</p>
<p>Luckily, the professor posted the lecture notes online (that's how I found out there was indeed lecture on Thursday). I was just wondering if there's anybody that's also taking COG SCI 1 and could you please tell me if I missed anything important the first day. (I saw on the lecture slides something about research participation...nothing was really explained in the notes though)</p>
<p>Hello! I am in Cog Sci 1 and yes, there was a speaker who came in to speak more about the research participation. Mainly, she’s from the psychology department and students have to be a part of a study done by other students, this is a class requirement. You go on their website and choose which experiment you have to be in and sign up and they stressed that you don’t go late/ditch the experiment
2 hours of participation required
this part of the syllabus is all you need </p>
<p>Research Participation: Because cognitive science is a scientific discipline, research experience is integral
to CogSci 1. This component of the course, known as the Research Participation Program (RPP), is somewhat
analogous to the laboratory sections offered in the natural sciences, except that students serve as subjects
rather than experimenters. The primary purpose of this requirement is to familiarize students with the
methods by which experimental research in cognitive science is conducted. In doing so, students will also
contribute data to ongoing research projects.
This course requires two (2) hours of experiment participation for each student. To sign up for research
participation, please visit:
[Research</a> Participation Program (RPP) | Department of Psychology, UC Berkeley](<a href=“http://psychology.berkeley.edu/undergraduate-program/research-participation-program]Research”>Research Participation Program | UC Psych)
and click on “Important Information for Students.” You must be at least 18 years old to participate. You may
contact rpp at berkeley dot edu if you have any questions about RPP. Finally, if you would rather not
participate in research, or if you are under 18, we can arrange an alternative assignment for you; please
contact your GSI about this. </p>
<p>There is a pre screening survey that you can do from now till September 3, and counts for one unit credit. Do it!</p>
