We just heard of a friend at school that got accepted - 2.8 GPA (weighted), 1020 SAT - some community service, no sports. Would not imagine recs are that great - a lot of issues in school through the years. A lot of family friends that are alumni. Have no idea how she got in and it really took away from a lot of the “competitive” feel of others acceptances at our school.

Two things come to mind with the above post:

1) “heard that” she got in…that doesn’t necessarily mean she actually was accepted, as we all know. If she ends up enrolling and attending, well then, I guess it was the truth. If she does actually matriculate, it could possibly be setting her up for academic failure - if she had at least a strong GPA and not so great scores, or strong scores and a not so great GPA it would make more sense for her to attend.

2) Tulane’s “holisitic” approach at work here, possibly. Or strong ties to Tulane. Whichever, it clearly is not the right fit academically, as I mentioned in the point above.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I would not let it bother anyone thinking it “dilutes” the integrity of the academics here. If indeed it is the truth, it’s ONE person.

Yes, I have learned, finally, to ignore that type of anecdotal “data”.

Also, she might have applied to Tulane’s continuing studies program (their community college.) Which is fine, but obviously much much less competitive. If she does well, she could potentially transfer into Tulane. I know someone who did this successfully ten years ago.
