anyone know anything about reconsideration ????

so ive already posted about this, but now im further along in the process and i was wondering if anyone else has ever been reconsidered.

first of all, ma stats:
3.2 gpa
1840 SAT
yadda yadda

hooooookay so, here's the story:
applied for penn state; main as my first choice, altoona as second even though i DO NOT wanna go there, and said i was willing to do summer because i am.

got into altoona, so i emailed the admin cons. and asked for reconsideration. he said they dont give out reconsideration unless you have extenuating circums (such as death in family, major injury, blahhh) i said i dooooo, and he said for me to e-mail his personal email about it and have any friends/fam email him as well.

i emailed him a 3 page letter explaining everything. (my extenuating circumstances have to do with 3 deaths, and a major tumor - dont worry its benign, and a buncha other crap. i mentioned though how i remained positive and stayed involved - ie im on student council, two jobs where i work everyday and i pay for ALL of my own things like car cellphone clothes food, i play guitar, cofounded and am currently the treasurer of a meditation and relaxtion club at my school, played field hockey for school, recently won an award for being an "ideal student" at my HS.) i also had my cousin, an attorney who was valedictorian of her 2006 class at Villanova, write to him along with my friend Eric, a current psu freshman, and my mother. they all emailed him stating how id be a great addition and how i was affected in high school. BLAH BLAH BLAAAAAAAAH!

anyways,
this admin. cons. got the emails and he told me today that he submitted my stuff to a committee and he says ill recieve a decision BY MAIL.

IS THAT NOT TORTUREEEEE ? he didnt tell me when the committee meets, and i already had a "decision" made on the psu website so i cant even check to see when they make up their freakin' minds.

so, my question to you is..
how long do you think it will take for a reply?
and do you think ill get in? or am i hoping for too muchhhh ?

sorry this is probably really long and obnoxious, but admin cons. leave us HANGINGGGGG. so frustrating >.< i already had to wait once and now i have to again.

anyways, thanks for the time you took to read this, and if you did reply, then thanks.

best of luck to all !!!!!

Is the 3.2 weighted or unweighted? Also, I would call admissions and press them to tell you when they are reviewing it and when you will know the decision. It's good to give them a ring from time to time so they know you are interested in attending and whatnot.

Good luck, hope you get in!

3.2 is uw, i have a 3.9 w but i dont think that got sent. its a long story but my guidance conselor is a crack addict, more or less.

so you think i should call them? and say what?

thank youuu :)

Call them and ask questions. Let them know that you're interested and you won't stop until they admit you. Also, I don't think it matters what gpa your counselor sent in. From what I understood talking to my PSU admissions counselor, Penn State totally recalculates your GPA using their own system which takes into account honors and AP classes. Your SAT's are a tad low, but your GPA is right on target if not higher than what I think you need for admission. Keep trying and I hope it works out.

yeah, i hope they'll admit me when they reconsider my application because i did have some things that affected my grades. we'll see :) i just dont want to have to check the mail every single day until it comes, it could take months !!

wait, they told me they didnt recalculate but took what your school gave them? I beleive that because think about the time it takes to recalculate a GPA

My admissions counselor called and interviewed me because I am applying as a junior, and gave me the opportunity to ask questions when we had finished. I specifically asked about how they calculate GPA, and he told me that they formulate GPA based on a system of their own. However, he would not tell me exactly what the system takes into account. Then again, this could just be for premedicine and not other majors.

no, actually i've heard that too arde. if you read around on the penn state threads others mention it as well. oh penn state, how you toy with my mind...

but i dont understnad why they would lie? they said they take what our school gives them then they asked me what I think i had . . i told them. they said they did not give me any disadvantage . . basically telling me that is what they had in their system for me.

Two years ago when S applied for freshman admission, Admissions told him that they use whatever GPA the high school sends. They told him that 'that high schools knows the worth of their classes'. S attended an all honors magnet school that did not weight GPA at all or have class rank. Admissions said that they would just use the GPA that was sent. No recalculation for the 20 plus honors and/or AP courses that he took.

If you can get your GC to submit your weighted GPA, you will have a much better chance of admission. Maybe you can even get your GC to call and tell admissions that the school omitted the submission of your weighted GPA and would like to update your file.

i think theres a sort of misunderstanding. the reconsideration is NOT going to be based on my gpa. i was already rejected because of it. its based on personal circumstances. read my whole post, you'll see.

thanks tho :)

Yes, I DID read your whole post, but I believe your initial rejection was mostly due to your GPA. 3.2 is subpar for University Park. However, your weighted GPA is well within range for University Park. Having your weighted GPA submitted, along with your letter and recommedations, may push you into the admitted range upon reconsideration. Anything may help...just my opinion.

well yes i agree that it was on my GPA, but i dont think they'll be looking at that when they reconsider. they're reconsidering my application based on WHY my grades were so low, not the fact that they are.

who knows, i guess we'll have to see.
thanks for the thoughts though :)

I guess I was looking at it from the standpoint that, if your weighted GPA was submitted, you might not have to explain why your grades were low. A weighted GPA of 3.9 is a fine GPA.

Good luck to you. I hope you are successful in the reconsideration process.

yeah, i guess i'll just have to wait and see. its just a bit aggrevating not knowing when the committee is going to meet, how long it takes to make a decision, or when i'll even recieve the decision. i'll be camping out by my mailbox for the next month and a half, it looks like.

I know someone who got reconsidered and it took several weeks.

did they end up getting in?

they heard by mail i assume? and do you know if anything changes online? its so frustrating haha.

i'm wondering if i should reserve my spot in altoona just in case. its kind of confusing.

Is housing still available in Altoona. We are still waiting on a decision for our son (he applied before the 30th) but Altoona was his second choice.
It they hold up the decision much longer I am worried that on campus housing will not be available

im not sure about altoona but i know a bunch of other campuses have housing already taken or waiting lists. altoona has limited housing, and a lot of freshman end up living in apartments. however, your S will hear back this month and if he makes the deposit ASAP (assuming he gets into altoona and wants to go there) then id doubt youd have much trouble getting housing, considering its only jan. and a bunch of kids havent heard back yet from their schools, so not many have accepted their offers of admission.
