I know somebody who's going there, I was just curious about the prestige/ good qualities of the school... is it considered anywhere near as good as Toronto? Would it rank anywhere near a top 50 American University? Besides vancouver, what are the perks or good qualities that would make a person want to go there?

buuuuuuuummmp

i'm originally from canada. ubc is a really good school but i hear it fluctuates in the rankings depending on the year and how much money they have. it is still one of the most prestigious in canada though

I was just talking to a Canadian friend of mine about this school. She said that she knows people who chose UBC over McGill. It is considered one of the top schools in Canada, but for some reason is rarely included in US rankings. They have a crapload of activities for you to take part in and are in a commuter area. McGill is much more selective and definitely a great place to get an education, but I'd still recommend checking out UBC. :)

McGill is not much more selective; that only holds true for US applications.
for domestic students in canada, students who can get in one normally have the grades to get in the other, and vice versa. McGill just has a majority of Quebec students while UBC has BC students.

I'm from WA state and interested in UBC also. However, I really would like a campus where there are a lot of students that live on campus. Is UBC mainly commuter-based or are there dorms for students to live at on campus?

UBC has dorms on campus, and there is off-campus housing too, which can get somewhat pricey. Give UBC a look: it does have lots of student activities and the like, with its big student population and large campus.

Hello i visited UBC in june and really liked it.the only problem is the weather it rains too much...I've also visited Mcgill but didn't like it a lot i would choose UBC, it has great academics, a lot of different programs to choose from ,vancouver is a very friendly city, and the mountains are gorgeous.

UBC is big with lots of concrete. Reportedly a solid education. Why not look into the private Simon Fraser University as well.

Ummm... Simon Fraser University is not private. It is public just like every other major university in Canada.

On a slightly related topic, sometimes I get the feeling that Americans think Canadian universities that are named after a person are better simply because they sound more like top institutions in the US. Canadian schools named after a city or province, however, sound like (less prestigious) state schools in the US and must therefore be less desirable.

Part of this idea comes from ill-informed posts about Canadian universities like the one above me, but a bigger part of it comes from the widespread perception among American posters on CC that McGill University is without a doubt the best university in Canada.

Just a thought.

UBC, UofT, McGill, Queen's are all up there for best school in Canada.

I wouldn't recommend it. Rains TONS, very crowded, and lots of those people speak languages other than English.

well, in my mind, its a boring, gloomy city. Nothing is interesting.

but I still recommend UBC over other schools in eastern Canada, because of the WEATHER! keep in mind that vancouver isthe only warm place in Canada.
in Toronto, for example, it snows everyday, and the temprature is like -30C something.Plus, UT doesn't exceed UBC by much. Lots of ppl, especially in BC, choose to stay in Vancouver even they can get into UT or whatever schools in the other parts of Canada.

Erm, dude. Toronto, snows everyday? -30? Since when?!

Honestly people. Canada is not that cold!

Yeah, Canada isnt cold. It's the same as here give or take.

"Vancouver isthe only warm place in Canada. In Toronto, for example, it snows everyday, and the temprature is like -30C something."

So is ignorance in fashion now or something? I mean, you're already on the internet; it's not that hard to use google to check basic facts before embarassing yourself like that.

Yet, lots of them would still score better than your 1260 on SAT.

He didnt say they were dumb jack-a

His comment has a condescending tone to it.

I am saying foreign students at the highly competitve UBC have good comment on English and they can speak English fluently to any English speaker.

By the way, I don't think being able to speak English = intelligent.

Nauru, sorry for the mistatement but don't make such a stupendous jump in reasoning about Americans' perceptions of Canadian universities. There are more than a few public colleges in the U.S. named after personages rather than having a regional designation or title. And most of us yanks like to judge an institution by the quality of its assets.
