Anyone know how competitive UCI's Informatics program is?

When I initially submitted my application for transfer, I indicated Computer Science as my first choice and Informatics as my second choice. After some extensive thinking (I do not want to do software engineering as a career, but rather product management) and discussing with friends that are majoring in Computer Science at UCI, I decided to submit a change of major on my UCI portal. My first choice is now Informatics.

My grade point average isn’t too hot, embarrassingly, it is at a 3.05. It will jump to around 3.4 after spring semester (I got an F in a course this past fall). My personal statements and EC’s are relatively good. I was then wondering if anyone had any experience and or knowledge of Informatics at UCI?

According to the data at https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major for Informatics at UCI, the major is not heavily impacted but there seems to be an incredibly low admit rate.

Thank you, and cheers!

P.S. If you know anything else about the major itself and how the program/major is, do let me know.

I don’t know about that major but a friend of mine just wanted to change the major on his Berkeley application and was told it was past the deadline and too late, so you should check that.

According to the following link, the admit Transfer GPA for Informatics 2015 was 3.31-3.75 with a 23% admit rate.

@ohm888, thank you for the response.

I am certain Informatics is my first choice major now. I submitted the change in early-January.

@gumbymom, thank you as well for the response.

I do see the data. It’s a bit difficult to deconstruct, i.e. the enroll grade point average range was 3.13-3.55. Does that indicate that the student with the 3.13 was the lowest acceptable GPA that enrolled to the program? I think it does.

Anyway, I’ll definitely just have to wait and see. It looks like I’ll maybe have to appeal. But again, there’s no rush.

According to the website, the Admit GPA range and the Enrolled ranges is the 25th-75th percentile, so some applicants had lower and higher GPA’s than the listed range.

The lowest enroll number is the lowest 25%, and that number is already lower than the admit range. But we have no idea what the lowest admit number below the stated range is. It could be lower than 3.13 or not. And the enroll range is not as high as the admit range, meaning there likely was a sizable number that didn’t enroll after being accepted. And the final count could include people from waitlists. You never know.
