I was thinking of applying to Cornell, UPenn, Duke, and Notre Dame. I've looked into these schools and I can picture myself going to any one of these. I'm just afraid it's gonna cost my family a lot. I don't want them to spend more than 12K a year. I'm not trying to be stingy about money, but considering that they still have to pay for my expensive high school and my little sibling who will go to that same high school in a few years, I don't want them to suffer. Plus, I think my parents earn 130K combined, meaning I'm not exactly the "needy" type, but my parents WILL suffer quite a lot if not given a lot of aid.

You should really check out Cornell’s financial aid calculator. It will give you a very exact number and should help you a lot.

If your parents make 130k a year them you will not get up to $48,000 in aid if that’s how much you need or even close to that much.

I would anticipate that with an income of $130,000 your expected parent contribution is going to be around $35,000 per year?? Depending on how strong a student you are, you may have to look into schools that give generous merit aid to get the kind of aid you are talking about.

Our family’s adjusted gross income is around 61,000 per year. Total financial aid received is right at 47,000. So basically that pretty much covers all tuition and fees, but leaves most of housing, meals for us to pay. Around 12,000 a year or maybe a little more or less, but close.

Although I am an alum who is 4 years out from Cornell and missed the benefits of the financial aid reform, I doubt the school’s EFC calculation has changed all that much. So, to give you some idea of what you can expect:

My parents’ adjusted gross income was around $110,000. They owned their home and I was the only 1 of 3 children in college; my EFC was about $15,000 each year and my parents couldn’t pay that, so it was up to me to cover it each year.

Dewdrop - long time no see. You are in med school?
