I live in the detroit area specifically troy. does anybody know anyone I can contact for either or both of these?

Are you in HS or college? Contact your family doctor, your parent’s or other family members doctors and ask about shadowing, it should be pretty simple.

As to research, start by looking online at the websites of nearby universities, try to find opportunities to volunteer or get work study

Start at your high school. Area high schools may have a summer science program in conjunction with local research facilities or universities. Ask your science teacher or GC.

yes, i am in highschool

If you are HS you might look for volunteer opportunities in health related areas

fyi, the things you are doing now, while certainly a good idea, won’t matter one iota in terms of your actual med school applications (as they are in HS). If I were you, I’d probably focus on developing other areas of interest and talent outside medicine while in HS. I would suggest job shadowing might come later ideally, but the suggestions offered to you are the way to start out.

Contact your family physician, parents of your friends. Connection is a key. As far as I know, living close to Detroit in more economically depressed area than Detroit, doing research on your own will not help. Go thru people that you know. It does matter if you are planning to apply to some selective programs like combined bs/md. otherwise, you do not need it now, just do it as pre-med in college, although some elite colleges are looking into volunteering type of ECs, which could be any medically related or not.
