This question is about non-TAG applicants. Their main transfer website doesn't really give us that much information. Does anyone anything specific about their evaluation process, i.e. which factors are the most important, how much completion of the IGETC before Spring matters, etc.

Also, is the rumor true that they don't place major emphasis on the Personal Statement? Because I tried so hard on mine . . .

OMG i can’t believe that! Why wouldn’t a UC, especially UCSD, not read a personal statement! Sigh, I basically spent days on that personal statement for nothing then…

UCSD is all I wanted, and because I believe I’m borderline I thought my personal statement could be an edge for me.

UCSD does NOT really use your Personal Statement, they mostly base it off your numbers and I would highly recommend being IGETC certified before transferring it benefits you in the end. I transferred to UCSD and being IGETC certified meant i only had to complete 3 more courses of GE/Lower Division when I came here…

I came here to say if you plan to attend UCSD, your personal statement isn’t COMPLETELY useless. UCSD will forward your statements to some scholarship commitees, and if you qualify you might get a scholarship from it.

anyhow, you should just get IGETC certified, it makes your admission guaranteed. its a load off your mind and cheaper that way.

But if you are trying to transfer asap, you are lower down on the list without that IGETC, you are basically regular decision. good stats will get you in, with EC’s and a good personal statement

…can give false hope to people!! I have VERIFIED by not only speaking to a UCSD admissions rep who came to our CC a couple months back, but have seen some “powerpoint slides” meant for CC counselors, that UCSD DOES NOT read the personal statement. Like someone mentioned above, they use it only for scholarship pursposes. According to their rep, their admissions are based only on GPA and COMPLETION OF PRE-REQUISITES (and maybe to some extent on other things like GRADE TRENDS and MAJOR GPA as well). Only UCLA, UCB and UC-Irvine read the personal statement (Don’t really know about the other UCs, but from my recollection of reading something somewhere most of them don’t read it as well)

Why is there debate on whether UCSD uses the PS?

ernily already posted the transfer admission criteria directly from the UC website. It clearly states that UCSD does NOT use the PS as a part of their admission criteria.

There is also a footnote at the bottom that states ALL UCs use the PS for scholarships and explaining any educational gaps.
