I know UC Berkeley says they acknowledge the fact that their comp sci 61s are hard to find at community colleges, but does anyone know where you can find them in the Los Angeles area? Looks like most ccs have only data structure. i would like to take the classes if I could, just to get an advantage.
SMC offers a computer architecture class(CS 42). It might not be considered a course equivalent to UCB’s 61C, but you can always ask a counselor to make sure. I, for one, am taking the class in the spring since UCLA said “if your schedule permits, complete CS 42 in addition to the other courses outlined on assist. This is not a requirement, but completing it at SMC prior to transfer will satisfy an equivalent course at UCLA, so you will not have to complete it there, if admitted”. Maybe UCB will accept it as well.
As far as I know, Laney CC currently has the only fully equivalent 61A course. Moorpark I believe has the most prerequisites offered in the area for CS. They have courses that articulate to 61C.
Based on what I was told by Berkeley Admissions Officers, albeit not for CS, generally even if the classes aren’t the exact equivalent as long it gives you “functional experience” in your field, it’s considered a “pro” for admissions.
