I want to be in the band in college, but I play the clarinet, and read this on their site:

"No flutes or clarinets are used in the Spartan Band, as these instruments are difficult to hear in the large Big Ten stadiums. Instead, E-flat cornets play the high "woodwind-like" parts. "

Do we get to train on new instruments? I was planning on playing the mellophone anyways...but since I play the clarinet, how would this work?

I’m not sure. There’s a girl in one of my classes who is in the band and I could have sworn she said she played clarinet or flute. I will ask her on Thursday and get back to you.

That is only the rules for marching band. There is the Campus Band that use flutes and such. They have concerts at the Wharton Center twice a semester.

Thanks roman, I’ll wait to hear from you.

And shyanne, I’m not sure I want to join concert band yet in college, I’m only sure of marching band atm. =)

I was in the band. No clarinets or flutes, but you can try out on alto/tenor sax or any other instrument. A good portion of the tenors and altos just play sax for marching band. It’s a very rewarding experience, good luck on your audition.

Also, if you can play brass, I know for a fact that the trombone section is going to have a lot of openings this year, like half the section isn’t returning this year.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the SMB.
