My son's going back to Bloomington on August 12th to change apartments and get things ready prior to the start of the new school year.

Anyone else heading back a few days early to get ready for the new school year?

We'll be moving son in to his apartment on the 24th. He would have liked to get back sooner but we need him to help us move his sister into her apt in St. Louis 2 days before. Yes, we are setting up 2 different apartments 2 days apart with a stop in Chicago midway through --yikes!!! I'm just praying for no rain, low humidity, and non-blistering temps in both locations!

Will you be coming out with your son?

Wow, ILmom, not a fun trip. The trip from Chicago to B-ton isn't fun, but I can't imagine going down to St. Louis, back to Chicago and back down to B-ton. During the 8 months or so prior to our move to B-ton, I made the drive down from the western suburbs every 2 or 3 weeks. I finally decided that leaving by 4:30 am was the best way to avoid traffic. Is there anyway you can drop D off in St. Louis and then head across IL to B-ton or just too much stuff?

rrah,

Unfortunately, we have WAY too much stuff between the 2 of them to make your idea feasible. Luckily, this is the last year we will have this problem as daughter is graduating in the spring AND son has been told his stuff is going into storage in Bloomington for the summers if he doesn't take a 12-month lease.

We're in Batavia. Were you as far west as us?

Calcruzer,

Where did your son store his stuff over the summer? Or did he have a 12 month lease enabling him to keep his stuff in the apt?

ILmom--I sent you a message.

We were definitely as far west as you. I think I took every possible route that year to find the "best" way.

My son is a Freshman and we are moving him into his dorm one day early on the 26th. We don't have too much to move and fortunately we only live @ 2 hours away from Bloomington.

Wow, Illinois Mom--sounds like the gas prices will be hitting you pretty hard this summer with that trip.

My son had a 12 month lease (can you really get one for less than that in Bloomington?), so storage was not a problem. He does have to be out by end of day August 14th, though, so there's not much time to pack up and get out of the current place and into the new one.

My wife will be flying there to help him move;--unfortunately, my work requires me to be back in England and Wales later that week and through the following week. Oh, well--I'll suffer through.

P.S. My wife said she prefers to be the one to go to Bloomington, anyway--but made it clear I'll be picking up the tab for her to go to London the next time my work requires me to be "across the pond" (probably in early December). Thank goodness for frequent flier miles, and business-paid hotels.

Calcruzer,

Too bad you are going to miss out on all the fun! Wish I could figure out a way to wangle a trip to London. Very nice, although I know you will be working.

Son's apartment is actually a 10 month lease starting 8/20, that can be extended to 12 if they want to re-up for next year. That way no moving involved! Can you tell which way I would like this thing to go? Unfortunately, he is already talking about getting a house for junior year.....

And yes, we are really looking forward to the gas bill for these 2 moves. NOT! It's starting to come down a bit here, last I saw was $3.98. Went as high as $4.29.

Moved my son into his dorm today and there were a lot of others moving in early. We were able to park pretty close to his building entrance, and the weather was just perfect today! I'm glad we chose to move in a day early. I can only imagine what a mess it will be tomorrow! After moving in and making a trip to Target, we got his books at TIS, which was extremely busy also. I know my son is glad that he can just sit back tomorrow and watch rather than be in the middle of the chaos. Another bonus to moving in early is that he took his choice of bed, desk and closet. Hope his roommate isn't too upset, but he's hoping to room with a friend anyway - so I don't think he should complain too much.
