anyone NOT attending ucla orientation?

hi, i was wondering if there are anyone out there that are NOT going to attend UCLa orientation. If yes, please share what are the steps that you need to do or prepare for class registration.

GO! it is key, don’t worry about the fee becuz it can be waved, and you don’t have to pay it now. GO!!!

I won’t be going either. Seems to me like a waste of time when you can always go to the website and see what classes you need and a phone call would do (instead of a 14 hour round trip, $150 on gas, $ for hotel & food, etc). I’m supposed to get priority class sign-ups via URSA, so I’ll be raising hell if I can’t sign up at the same time when these orientation foolios get to.

How can the fee be waived? Don’t think it can. I am not spending $150 to do something I can do online for free. If it was like $20 I would go, lol.

When you apply, check fee waiver…

“a phone call would do”, you have obviously never called UCLA ahhahaha

You can only get a 25-40% waiver, not complete. So you will still be paying $75-$100 most likely. Also since I did not apply (nor would qualify) for financial aid, I can’t get the waiver :(

I don’t think I’ll be going. I went to the Berkeley one last year, and while there were some informative parts, it was mostly a waste of time and money.

Orientation is where you sign up for classes. If you don’t go, you have to wait til all the orientations are over to sign up for classes, August 17. I have no idea about priority sign-ups.

You won’t be billed for it until your November 2009 UCLA Billing Statement. So unless you have to travel from really far away, orientation is definitely worth it.

How can the fee be waived?

The whole fee won’t be waived (only 25-40%), but once you sign-up for the orientation, there will be a box to check that offers the ability to have the fee partially waived.

I don’t think I’m going to orientation as well because I just had a private tour guided by my cousin last weekend lol. FIY, the buffet there is the bomb!! And it seems to be the only thing I remember about UCLA lol.

thanks for all the input. money isn’t the real reason why i am not attending, but time is. i need to go for a 3 months trip back home starting this early july.

anyway, 50calgoesboom, can you please explain to me the early registration at URSA. if possible, i would like to have this kind of privilege also.

i cant, its not like i dont want to, we simply cannot afford it, and we cant do financial aid either, long story, so i cant do the waiver…life sucks but thats the sad truth. now if anyone here isnt going HOW are you going to take the language placement test and the math placement test?

arn’t placement tests for freshman?

Can’t afford orientation fee + trip fees involved.
Too long.

Got August 7th for enrollment date.
I would’ve gone if I knew it would be SO late.

$125 for the orientation + $80? to stay the night at UCLA + ~$130 for a round trip ticket from northern california to burbank + bus fair to/from UCLA / airport.

at the VERY most, this orientation should cost you $350.
the fees get put onto your fall quarter’s payment = pay nothing now.
over the course of next year, you’re going to shell out ~$25,000.
the $350 adds 1.4% to your total cost of attendance, a nominal fee, considering how acquainted you’ll be with both the campus and the counselors + earlier class registration + coached course planning.

lie to us when you say that you can’t afford it, but don’t lie to yourselves…

Yes, the orientation fee is added on later, but what I don’t have is the money in my bank account that I can buy a plane ticket with, or book the motel room.
(Do I have to get personal? Well my boss has declared bankruptcy after he delayed me and my coworkers’ paychecks for 6 months. Lesson learned.)

Trust me, I tried really hard to afford the trip, but borrowing money from my parents is not an option right now either… I had to settle for the inconvenient alternative.

you don’t need money for a motel.
ucla will put you up for an added fee (again, put on your first quarter payment).
round trip on a greyhound would = $92 from SF to LA.
let’s say you sign up for an orientation session in mid july… if you’re saying that you won’t be able to somehow come up with ~$100 over the course of a month, i think i can safely say that you’re just not applying yourself.
HUSTLE, man!

Thanks for the good info - I’m actually about to go to a temp job right now. Gotta pay off those overdue bills and rent somehow.

Is everyone else not going because of money issues as well? Or because you feel the orientation is too long/not helpful?

all the other fees are something that we can’t help with spending, because they are required for graduation. For example, in order to be enrolled at UCLA, we need to have a health insurance, which is something we might not need for the whole year. If orientation is optional and not too helpful, we wouldn’t want to pour out our money for the reason that it’s fun. We can’t afford it, because we can’t make an unnecessary choice. We are not rich enough to give it a shot.
