Anyone not get excepted

that's pretty cool. do you know amit patel? He used to go to my school.

hey everyone, i applied early, got deferred, and a girl got accepted from our school...all state flute player..ppshh...anyways, sorry to those who didn't make it and props to those who did. But I live in Houston, and the 411 on rice is that it's a good school, but frankly, really boring, dull, overworked, and overrated in my book...i got deferred but i applied Early, and seeing your stats rice obsessive, i know my chances are slim, but if it's any consolation, there are SOOO many better schools out there, good luck kid. BTW, did anyone hear about that hakeem olajuwon situation? OMG, that just ticks me off, they want to stain Hakeem's great charity work, basketball career and everything he's done with a misunderstanding? I'm Muslim, and I've met Hakeem, and frankly, he is VERY sincere and I hate to see this kind of negative media for such a great person...oh well..

btw, an interviewer said, "Rice is looking for the well-rounded class, not well-rounded student.." riiight...whatever that means...right , rice obsessive?

Yeah I've heard that phrase used before too- and it is pretty vague, but i do think that the school does have the discretion to select candidates based on very specific parameters based on the atmosphere the school is trying to create- I dont know what the admissions people didnt like about me- but there must have been something...

Dude, I am from New York and trust me, I know less about Rice than you do probably but I know one thing it doesn't get much better than Rice. I have no clue what you are talking about and frankly, I do not really care. The fact you applied ed speaks volumes and shows that you thought it was good enough that you would be obliged to attend if accepted. And btw, Rice is underrated and ppl up here do not really hear about it that much. With that in mind, I wouldn't be bashing Rice b/c you were deferred. That's just my feeling.

Dog87 probably has a point there- hey I got denied and even I'm not bashing them... I still like and admire the school- although I no longer have the opportunity to attend.

sne- what school in Houston has 15 valedictorians? How does that work?

stratfod....everyone with told scores are vales...there has been no discrimintation amonst them so far

Hey,
Rice-Obsessive, I'm really sorry about your situation; you're "stats" and everything look great so I'm confident that come April, you'll be recieving plenty of good news and finding the school which fits you best. Good luck with all your other schools and I'm sure you'll have a blast wherever you end up at!!!

Thanks tommyy- but since I was denied outright from Rice, I dont really have any other applications out. My plan now is to go to UNC and build myself as a transfer student...

Smart move:)

Never say never.

I got denied....sigh..I am pretty sure it was because of my essay..it sucked butt!

rice-obsessive, I'm in the same boat as you

(sup rejected buddy)

1450 SAT I
740/740/640 SATII
ACT 34
GPA 4.2
lots of ECs, great essays/recs/interview

oh well, hopefully Northwestern takes a brighter view of me.....

ecnerwalc3321- sorry it took so long. But yeah I know amit. What's your name? I can tell him hi or that I know you or something. lol yeah do you know spencer and cameron and luke? They used to go to ASFA as well.

I got denied :(

wow i just read my post from earlier and have no idea what i said. it was really late. but my school has a lot of vales because everyone just gets all A's with the hardest course load available..they don't distinguish between actual grades, just if its an a...

Looking at some of this stuff, I feel really blessed to be accepted. Rice was the second application I did, and it was hardly the polished masterwork I wish it could have been. I didn't have my full activity list, not realizing until later that a short resume and awards list was really not a sufficient description of my EC's. My main essay was also unoriginal in terms of content, although I will give myself credit for great use of language. My application definitely did not have a strong focus.

That being said, I'm really sorry to see great people who got deferred and rejected.

Joey

The admissions process is very hard. For example, for the experienced readers that the Rice committee holds, they can tell by one's essay if one is arrogant or lofty and they can reject the student outright even if the essay was very good. Sometimes they read into the teachers' recs a little too much. the reason I know is b/c when one of my friends got rejected from the Univ. of Chicago for ED last year he read his teacher recs and made his english teacher read his essays. He found out that the teachers wrote he was very hardworking but made him sound like a complete bookworm and a nerd. His English teacher told him while his essays were exemplary, it made him sound too presumptuous and haughty. However he's now going to Northwestern so for those not accepted, don't despair. So don't think there's something wrong with you if you are not accepted, like you didn't do enough ecs or something. Most of the time, it's really out of your hands.
