Not sure if any transfers from last year are still on here. Just curious tho. Any regrets on not choosing another UC?
I’m still around. Personally, I’ve enjoyed going to UCLA thus far. But, it ain’t perfect. Then again, what school is?
Would you say you’ve regretted transferring to UCLA, @sonic23?
I know of a couple who deeply regretted their choices until the second or third quarter, then made a turnaround. So all I can say is for anyone who later has second thoughts, just hold on.
I was just thinking about this as well. I was curious how much of it was the specific UC, or if it was just transfer shock in general. I’d also be curious to see if there was a split between on campus, off campus, and commuter students.
If anyone is nerdy, try searching transfer shock into google scholar, some of the articles are really interesting!
Everyone I’ve heard of, incl ppl going to other OOS colleges, is once you make friends, that’s the key that changes it all. It totally turns on a dime at that point.
No school is perfect, as Cayton has said.
I’ve enjoyed going to Berkeley. Have I gotten the grades that I’ve wished for once I got to Berkeley? No. But I have made the friends and experiences that I’ve always wished for and that’s all that matters at the end of the day.
@cayton I love UCLA but my course selection sucks. I’ve been getting stright As but I am bored out of my mind. Its probably just my major though. So it just makes me wonder if other UCs have better classes. For my history major literally all classes are scheduled at the same time, so it really limits what we can take too.
Socially I haven’t had the “college” experience but that’s because I’m married and commute and work. So I go to school and leave right away. I do love how many opportunities are available to us though, the career center helped me find a job within a week.
I guess I have mixed feelings
@sonic23 the straight A part is good.
@sonic23
I think things will get better in your senior year. You’ll have a better chance of getting the classes you want.
At least you have a 4.0, lol. That’s something to be proud of.
@Cayton Whattup Cayton. Are you done yet? What are you doing this summer?
I’ve got like 3 weeks to go plus finals week, @music1990.
I’m going to take some summer classes and try to get a job. Looking forward to summer! What about you? What’ve you been up to?
@Cayton I’m doing the same thing this summer as you. Classes, plus trying to get a job or internship. So far, I’ve really just mostly been doing school. No clubs or jobs, plus I’ve been taking the minimum units lol. So I haven’t been as stressed as a lot of other people, and I have plenty of time to hangout with friends or just relax and watch tv. I feel almost guilty though when I talk to people who are taking 19 units or are in like a bunch of clubs. I just wanted to make sure I got good grades though. I’ll try to be more active this summer and next fall.
@music1990
I bet Berkeley has a lot of those workaholic types who have to do a billion things at once. UCLA definitely does.
Nothing wrong with not being stressed, though. I haven’t been taking massive courseloads either, though I do plan on graduating on time, so I’ll have to take 4 classes a quarter for Fall, Winter, and Spring of next school year in addition to summer classes.
How are your English classes at Cal(You’re majoring in English, right?)? Fun? Underwhelming? Somewhere in the middle?
Do you have good professors?
Woohoo! Berkeley is done for the spring semester
@music1990 how was your year? Maybe we walked past each other and never knew it
@Cayton My major only requires 12 classes so that’s why it’s been so light. And yeah, I’m majoring in English. I feel like we have a lot less work than other majors to be honest, but I’m not complaining. There’s a lot of reading, but I read a lot anyway so that’s fine. But in terms of actual assignments, it’s not unusual for an entire class to consist of only three papers, maybe five pages each. One of my classes was just a midterm and a final, and half the class didn’t even come to lectures.
My classes have been pretty mixed. In some of them I have loved my professors, and in others they just seem like annoyed to be there. So yeah I would say somewhere in the middle. I think I read somewhere you have had mixed feelings for your professors as well? Have you spent much time figuring out what you are going to do after you graduate?
@ocnative I wouldn’t be surprised! It was pretty good overall. It’s honestly just such a relief to be at a good school. It gives you a lot of confidence, especially when you have spent the last few years in and out of community college and uncertain what you’re doing with your life lol. So glad the semester is over though. How about you? Good year? You do alright in your finals?
@music1990
My classes are a lot like that too with essays making up the entire class; philosophy and English are the most writing-intensive majors there are.
And in one of my classes this quarter, there’s only 23 students enrolled, and only like half show up. Talk about small class sizes. Today, there were like 9 or 10 people. The good thing about this is that the professor knows our names. It feels like CC all over again, in a good way.
I’ve liked most of my professors here so far, but there’s always a few who, well, suck. I have one like that this quarter. Drones on and on and doesn’t seem to have a firm grasp of the material, strangely enough. Thankfully, most of them have been good at their job and the other two classes I have right now are with great professors in small classroom settings. I count myself very lucky for that. In general, UCLA philosophy professors are pretty great and concerned with student learning and success.
Oh, and I really do wonder what I’ll do after graduating. Still thinking about it. I’ll try and figure that out, and soon.
Lucky you, lol.
What are you doing for the summer?
@music1990
It was a good year also! I enjoyed my classes, but I felt that it was the things outside of class that made my year more memorable for me.
I’ve also had pretty bad professors and some inspiring ones. One professor I had last semester was awful, since she was basically reading off a script during the entire lecture from a podium. Another did not know how to lecture if his life depended on it.
My classes have never been small though. One was 400 from my first semester and the smallest I had this year was only about 54. Discussions also felt useless to me at times.
@Cayton
Hey you.
I’ll actually be doing a summer internship in finance. How’s the quarter going?
@ocnative
The quarter’s going well. Well enough, anyway. And congrats on the internship!
