Not the 'phone call itself...after all, I know what it means.

The other day the Assistant Dean of Enrollment at a university that D applied to called and asked me (mom, since I was home and answered the 'phone) if it would be possible for me to nudge one of D's previous high schools to send an official transcript. The Asst Dean said that they, the uni, had not received an official transcript, just unofficial computer printouts with no seal, despite numerous requests on my part, as well as an informal call from the Asst Dean himself to the high school asking for an OFFICIAL transcript.

The Asst Dean said the request official transcript is (and I am quoting) "a formality, because I am the bean counter around here, I have to make sure all the paperwork is firmly in place before I send file on up to the Dean of Enrollment."

Can I interpret this to mean that daughter has been accepted? [I will never tell her until there is a confirmation letter in hand]. If an applicant were a contender for the "reject" pile would the Asst Dean spend the time to make a 'phone call to us or to the high school in question?

I certainly sounds like they WANT to accept her, but they have to have certain specific paperwork in hand before her application can move ahead. I’d get on that official transcript business ASAP.

Congratulations on the pending acceptance! And on your punctilious grammatical skills. Few people bother to add the apostrophe these days. (Being serious, not snarky, in case that doesn’t translate in this medium!)

Yes it sounds like he’s hinting that she will be accepted.

I just can’t imagine a high school that can’t send an official transcript, even after receiving a call from the assistant dean! You bet I would be at the school asap explaining ever so politely to the person in charge of transcripts that the asst. dean had called you because he had already called the school and had still not received the official transcript.

If that person didn’t seem willing to do it immediately, I would make an appointment with the head counselor or the principal. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this in mid-February!

This is THE time of year when the admissions departments get especially busy. I’m guessing your DD attended several schools and this one is not her current HS. Regardless of the reason, it still sounds as if your DD must be looking good and now it’s just a matter of getting everything official. You should know that colleges are particularly careful these days after a few serious slips of dishonesty in this process.

Sounds to me like she’s in. Congratulations!

Some HS’s have an attitude about sending official transcripts for students who attended but did not graduate from the HS. Our local public is one. I had to stand in the Guidance Office looking surly before the school relented. Sheesh, is that what I’m paying taxes to support?

Sometimes, schools charge to send official transcripts. Could this school have a fee, and you haven’t paid it, so that is why they haven’t sent an “official” transcript? I would definitely call the school, speak to the head of guidance, and find out what the difficulty is!

Don’t call, go (if at all possible). NewHope’s technique of looking surly might be the solution…but it is much harder to put off someone standing right in front of you than it is on the phone.

I am a bit confused by this. Wouldn’t your daughter’s current high school take her previous school’s transcript transcribe to her current school’s grading system, so her current school could provide a consolidated transcript?

D2 moved to a new high school this year. We’ve had to provide her transcript a few times for summer school applications, and her new school was able to provide a consolidated transcript. It took few tries for them to transcribe her old school’s grades to her new school’s equivalent.

Oldfort, the former high school says they “deleted” my daughter’s records from their computer before “transmitting” them over to the County School Board’s main computer. The County School Board says they (the CSB) have no records, and the former high school does have them somewhere on their computer/microfiche, it’s a matter of taking the time to look. All I know is that the new private school utilized the old report cards I cobbled together, along with a makeshift computer printout from the County School Board. The new school as well as I have been waiting several months for an official transcript, whether it be from the former high school OR County School Board. And now, the uni needs an official transcript.

And thank you for the compliment on the apostrophe!

Jeesh…word to the wise. Have an official transcript of the up to the minute grades made before any transfer to a new school! You never know if the records will go into some hole.

OP - I am sorry to hear that. This is not the time to be stressing over this.

When we left D2’s school last year, I insisted on taking her formal transcript with us. Since Oct, I have been bugging her new school to add her old school’s transcript to their database. They thought I was crazy for being anal.

If your kid is going to a private school, I would think they would be more flexible about how official your daughter’s previous school’s record is. If you could convince them to incorporate the old school’s record to their own record, then they should be able to produce an official consolidated transcript for the uni. Shouldn’t that be sufficient?

If the call were merely to inform you about a missing part of her application packet, a work study kid would have been making the call. The fact that an assistant dean is making the call sure sounds “suspicious” to me…

^^
Yeah, LMNOP, that was my first thought. D’s notices about missing pieces came via email or USPS, never by telephone. I guess I’ve read too many articles about phishing and other cons. If I did receive such a call, I’d make sure that the address I was given to mail in the transcript matches up with the address on the college website.

Finally got an official h/s transcript to the Assistant Dean of Enrollment! But now he’s on vacation for three weeks–geez, what a time to take a break. Bad news, because daughter has to make a decision for another school (Honor’s Program) by March 1st, and the Asst Dean won’t return to this particular school until after March 7th.

Panic! What to do?

Note: The call did come from the Asst Dean, it was bona fide; after the call we received two e-mails from his .edu address and the name matches up, etc etc.
