Anyone planning to major in journalism?

If so, where are you applying?

We are looking at U of Md College Park, Ohio University Athens, Indiana University Bloomington, U of Missouri Columbia, American University, and UNC Chapel Hill. Ball State University & University of Oregon as safeties.

S is a junior in HS, scored a 1380 on the CR + Math on his first time taking the SAT, 3.9 GPA, top 15% as of last year (should be higher this year), so-so ECs. We have a high EFC but we're not made of money and don't want our kids' college to bankrupt us, nor leave them with tons of debt, so we are not considering GW & Northwestern for that reason.

see the recent thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=310675

All very good choices. Also look into U-Florida, they have a top program as well.

So far my S (also a junior) will be considering UNC-Chapel Hill, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio Univ, Wisconsin, Penn State, Boston University and Syracuse, and maybe others. Another possibility is Michigan, which doesn't have a j-school but has a good media/communications major (a friend's S has had a great career so far with that major). BU and Syracuse are expensive, but do have some merit aid (especially Syracuse, I hear). We live in the DC area so he won't think about American or Maryland, but both are good possibilities. My niece is in the AU honors program and got a generous scholarship with stats something like yours. Maryland has an excellent reputation, and with both, you have all the resources of the nation's capital (I'm a little biased!).

Usually I'm on the fence about studying undergraduate journalism. I tend to think a solid liberal arts background is best. But I'm coming around to the idea as I look at these schools' curriculums--all heavily liberal arts-based and encourage minors or double majors. My S is determined--wants to do a double major in something like poli sci or history. He's also very passionate about photojournalism. Since I told him in middle school to find his passion and life would be good, I can't complain!

oregonianmom: As an in-stater, what's your opinion of the University of Oregon in general--and the j-school? I've been thinking that's one he could consider.

UT austin is good.

I'm a senior this year and I applied to UT, Syracuse, UNC, USC.

From what I understand from the parents I know whose children plan to study journalism, the Newhouse School at Syracuse University is a top-notch program. Also, American University and Penn State have good programs in journalism. Good luck to your son.

UGA has a pretty good j-program, but i dont paticularly like the school as a whole

Geezermom:
My son wants to double major in history or political science along with journalism too. Sounds like they think alike. U of Oregon has a very good reputation. My dad would probably never forgive S if he went there though; dad is a true blue Beaver (Oregon State). S doesn't want to stay in Oregon anyway, so it's a moot point.

Anyone visited Syracuse? An acquaintance visited there with her son (a senior) recently and was not impressed with the Syracuse area.

yea i visited it.

the surrounding city isnt all that but the campus itself is pretty nice. the people up there are northeasterners but all pretty nice. it gets cold as hell up there but the buildings are pretty close together so its not that bad and the town does a good job of clearing up snow. from what i heard the campus itself is usually pretty safe even tho the city might be a bit sketchy.

academics wise its a great school for journo and im thinking of going there for that reason. the other departments are good but theyre not as standout good as newhouse is. also it helps that SU has a great bball team since theres more school pride. i liked the size of the student body also. its not too big but not too small. also i visited the newhouse building and it is niiice. the facilities are very up to date and in the departments almost all the profs will be accessible to u. every1 has to go thru lecture hall size classes but with AP creds u mite get out of it.

sorry for this long ass ramble of a post but i hope it helped a bit. if u have anymore questions let me know.

American is a great idea because your son has a good chance at getting merit money there. I applied for journalism and was accepted with a hefty scholarship (18K/year), and my standardized test scores were pretty similar to his.

i've taken summer journalism classes @ ball state over the past two years. it's probably not a place i would want to go to college at.
i would have to say that the journalism program is fantastic--the technology is top-notch, and they have great teachers/software/living facilities. the campus is tiny but gorgeous. the only problem is Muncie. half the town is fairly rinky-dink, and the "village" that borders the campus is "quaint," at best. if your kid wants to go to a safe college, BSU is a good bet. but...it's a good think you're considering it as a safety school only.
