i received a thing in the mail talking about off-campus housing, the Private Residence Halls in Isla Vista (Tropicana Gardens and Fontainebleu)

i am going to be an incoming freshman, so why would they give that to us instead of on-campus housing details?

i would avoid Trop and Fontainebleu at all costs. Ever since FT closed its doors to SBCC students, they've started flooding Trop and Fontainebleu. Not the best place for a UCSB student. Also, things are so much nicer on campus in every way.

sixthbatter: do you go to ucsb? ya, i want to live on campus. i was just curious why ucsb sent those flyers to prospective freshman, versus a booklet talking about all the housing options in general. i guess i'll wait for that after i send in my SIR.

i went to ucsb for two years and transferred to ucla. i lived in san nicolas hall my first year, and I highly recommend that you try to do the same. ANything on the east side of campus(santa cruz, anacapa, santa rosa, san nicolas and san miguel) should be a fine choice for first year housing. I also wouldn't live in manzanita for my first year. you won't get to meet too many people. FT is alright since its only for ucsb students now, if you don't mind biking nearly a mile to campus. tropicana and fountainebleu are basically apartments dressed up as dorms. I must emphasize that the off campus dorms are not as nice as the on campus ones. I know of one person who left ucsb after the 1st quarter to go back home cuz he wasn't enjoying living at tropicana.

I don't think UCSB actually sent the flyers...it comes from an address in Isla Vista, whereas the campus' address is Santa Barbara. I'm sure the two dorms got together and sent them to all admitted students.

I have a friend who lives at trop and loves it...but I still think I'm gonna do on campus.

Sixthbatter

Was it difficult to transfer to UCLA? Would you mind telling us your major and GPA?

Why did you transfer to UCLA? Was that your initial favorite? What's the biggest difference for you between the two schools? How does the UCSB housing compare to UCLA or perhaps you are living off campus at UCLA.

Are you familiar with the baseball programs. Thought I would ask based on your userid. If it means something else I don't want to know. Do you know if either school promotes walk ons. I know some schools say don't bother. I want to go to UCSB or UCLA so I am not interested in going to a JC or small college just to play ball.

Did anyone tour the off campus dorms this weekend? I didn't tour, but I hung out at trop one night with some friends who live there. I think I'm gonna live there instead of on campus. I spent a lot of time at FT (I slept there for two nights...) and also some time at trop and I liked it way better.
