I went to second session of Summer Seminar at West Point.
The admission officer told us that he had already sent application packets to our home.

However, I did not receive it.

Did anyone receive it?

Did anyone receive it?

none received here in N. Cal yet. Would be very interested to know if anyone got it yet.

Don't believe it's out until mid-August.

Kate is correct, The last few years it hasn't been sent till sometime in August. Naval Academy sends theirs a bit earlier (early July I think).

Two years ago, USNA packet arrived in mid-June during the second session of NASS. On the other hand, USNA is the last to offer appointments...(to most applicants)

Yeah, usna09mom, you are right. I remember it came right after D came back from navy's summer seminar. Thanks.

I was at SLS II aswell, and my admissions officer for southwest said the packets wouldn't come till mid august, I've never heard of getting them this earlier and I imagine people would start posting if they had already come out. I think right now we should just focus on getting all of our nomination stuff out of the way so all we have to do is focus on main packet when it arrives.

is there anything we can go ahead and start compiling to make the turn around faster on the main packet? letters of rec(which teachers?? and is there a guideline to them??) etc...

We could give you that info from years past but the danger is that the requirements of this years app may change. Best to do as you said, concentrate on the nominations until the 2011 app packet arrives. Good Luck!!

tn48th: The only other advice that I would add is to make sure you send in your 6 semester transcript to WP admissions if you haven't done that yet. Register to take the SAT and ACT if you need to up your scores (and use the summer to get some extra prep in). Clarify in your own mind why you want to go to WP.
Good luck!

I'll be sending in 6th sem transcripts tomorrow (7/9) I've been trying to get them for about 3 weeks but have been having alot of trouble contacting teachers and school officials. What other things can I get in right now to be competitive for an LOA and show them I really want this?

SAT's (10 char)

tn48th: In the past 2 years, early LOAs have gone out in the middle of July based on part 1 of the application (or SLS application), SATs/ACTs, and 6 semester transcript (class rank and GPA). Make sure these are as competitive as possible to be in the running for a LOA.
If you did not pass the CFA at SLS, now would be the time to improve on that score as well.
Keep on top of DodMERB issues. if any remedials are requested, follow the instructions ASAP.

I have all of the above mentioned items turned into USMA except for the 6th semester transcripts but as I stated earlier I will have them in tomorrow. I passed my CFA at SLS and as far as my stats on the other items, 28 ACT, top 15 of 450, 3.87 GPA, 96.8 Cumulative Average. Since my stats for those are only average I really wish there was someway I could show USMA right now how motivated and driven I am to attend there since I know that plays some part in the process when it comes to a highly qualified, but not so motiviated candidate vs. a candidate with decent stats but very motivited and has a stong will to become a cadet. Any thoughts on this? Or something I could do to really stand out to admissions that would put me in the running for an LOA? I know they aren't that important but they sure are nice

Motivation is normally noted during the interview process (and later through your essays). Hopefully you made that clear when your squad leader did his/her one on one with you at SLS. My son did not realise the importance of that "chat" at the time, but it constituted the one and only interview that he ever had. The MALOs will also write a report based on the conversations they have with you, so make sure they understand your commitment too.
Take the SATs/ACTs more than once - that also demonstrates commitment to doing your best.
Remember that WP admissions is rolling admission, and is competitive based on the whole candidate score. Demonstrated interest is not a huge factor in the decision to give out a LOA.

In the end it comes down to numbers. In simple terms the Whole Candidate Score consists of 60% academic (primarily SAT/ACT, class rank, and GPA); 30% leadership (primarily demonstrated leadership potential in varsity sports, school clubs, and community activities); and 10% physical (CFA). The exact formula and the thresholds are held close to the vest by the Admissions Office. They will set a WCC for LOAs and offer them to those that exceed that score. The offers of admission that follow the LOAs are offered to candidates that are in the top of their MOC nomination groups. The score that will gain admission will drop as the season progresses and the class is filled. There are also other considerations that come into play as the Admissions Office is looking for a certain mix of athletes, scholars, minorities, and soldiers (prior service). Recruited athletes are treated somewhat outside of this process.

All that complete the somewhat arduous process have demonstrated commitment. What really sets those apart from the others are those that have persistence, not only following up with their application their senior year of high school, but those that continue to try again, again, and again if necessary. There is a Plebe that I met from our area that completed his junior year at Baylor prior to heading off to Beast. I'm sure his admission packet showed that he was truly motivated to attend USMA as he went through the process for the fourth time.

Hope this helps.

Is there a certain date that the 6 semester transcripts must be turned in by?

A transcript will need to be submitted with part 2 of your application. However, to be in the running for an early LOA, WP must have your six semester transcript. Early LOAs start going out mid July. With WP admissions try not to think of deadlines for submission. The sooner you get things in the better.

What is LOA?
All I've done so far is the form that opens up a file, sent them my SAT scores, and gotten applications for nominations from my senators etc.(filling them out this week). I have also scheduled a medical review physical(DODMERB?). So I should send them my 6 semester transcripts as soon as possible I guess. Anything else I need to do?

bigal40: I've copied information that I posted last year. If you do a search you will find lots of other information. It sounds as if you are on schedule with you application. Have you passed the CFA? If not (not sure if you went to SLS or not) start practicing for it. Good luck!

"An LOA is a conditional offer extended to a limited number of outstanding candidates, usually before they have nominations. Around 200 are issued each year. They start issuing them in July and most are usually gone by late October (a good reason to get all of your paperwork in early!). They are conditional on the candidate completing all of the outstanding admission requirements (CFA,DoDMERB, receiving a nomination etc).

Advantages of LOAs:
1. You are removed from the competition in your congressional
district to be #1 candidate. You just have to be one of the ten candidates who get a nomination.
2. West Point does not lose outstanding candidates who have been knocked out by other outstanding candidates in their congressional district."

Thanks for the reply. I didn't go to SLS so I still need to do my CFA. When and there do they do them at?
