Any non legacy, non urms, non athletes surprised they got accepted into Duke? Applying ED or not..it would be helpful if you indicated.

My GC called it a reach so I was initially surprised when I was accepted. But then I looked at the stats for people admitted in past years from my HS and realized people with my stats typically got in. So it became less of a surprise. :)

Oh and I applied RD.

well Duke is a reach for everyone no matter how good their stats

No, not really. For one thing, some schools are feeders. I wouldn't go as far as to call my school that, but Duke accepts over 35 students from my HS every year, and who's accepted tends to be fairly predictable. My GC only called it a major reach for me because he was brand new. I wouldn't go as far as to call it a match either, but it was definitely in that gray area in between a match and a reach. The only schools I'd call reaches for everyone are HYPSM.

Oh I see..what school did you go too. Your so lucky..Duke is my dream school. :)

I go to a magnet school in Northern VA. I think we actually could be called a Duke feeder this year because we're sending 25 people. :)

Good luck with your Duke app this fall/winter!

35 kids a year isn't a feeder??? My school has sent 1 kid... ever.

What were your SAT scores banana?

LOL my school hasn't sent any I believe..but we have quite a few that get accepted to the ivies..and schools of the same caliber..Stanford, JHU, Rice.

Duke accepts around 35 every year, but usually only about 10 enroll. shrugs For some reason more people took Duke up on its offer this year. Same thing happened with Princeton.

My SAT was 800V 730M. I got unlucky with a harsh curve for math, but oh well. I didn't bother to retake it. SAT IIs were 780/780/730. APs were eight 5's and a 4.

I would have been surprised if I hadn't gotten in-not really because of my "stats," but because I wanted to go there so badly. I think I might've had an edge because I'm in-state, though.

Yea i'm pretty surprised I got in. Our school is definately not a feeder...I'm the only one going this year out of about 1200..and I think 2 got in. Had no ancestry, atheletics, avergae sat scores......yea how DID i get in again..lol.

Duke was one of my reaches as was Brown (i got waitlisted). So i was pleasently surprised.

You give me hope :)
I'd guess it would be better if your school doesn't really consider Duke a popular school because then less people apply. Because I haven't really heard anyone consider Duke as an option at my school. Everyone is basically interested into Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Rice, and UT.

Hey bananainpyjamas I was just wondering do you go to Thomas Jefferson High School. I live in VA so just wondering.

imacrazyscientist, where do you go to school?

How'd you ever guess? :p Where do you go to school?

Hey That's so cool banana. I live near Fairfax County and that's like the nearest magnet school. I tried for it, but I didn't get in. TJHS is a pretty good school.

My school's just a random public school no ones heard of out of charlotte. So I'm pretty much an average white girl who really wanted to go to Duke and applied ED. My EC's sucked...I wasn't in a single club til junior year...all I had was recreational dance. Um, average test scores for Duke, good grades like everyone else applying to Duke...I really had nothing that stood out. I thought I stood a decent chance at getting in ED, but got deferred. It blatantly said in the letter probably 10% of ED deferees would be accepted, and judging from the applicant pool I put it out of sight. Um, March 31st came, I clicked the link with a smirk on my face like "here's my rejection letter" and quite to my surprise I pretty much died when I saw an acceptance letter.

To sum up my little story...I'm really just nothing special, and hit it big. Miracles happen.

Inspiring story :)..ya I consider myself an above average student, not stellar..nothing in comparison thought to a lot of these people on cc who have won 5 national awards..volunteer 1000 hrs plus and have been playin an instrument or in a sport since they were 4, but I definitely think I will apply!
