Hi, I didn't really know what category to put this under where dancers would be the ones answering so I figured here was ok.
I've been given the opportunity to travel to New York City with my family in a few days, and I wanted to try some classes at BDC or Steps? Which do you recommend? What styles? I wanted to try ballet and jazz.
Also, how are the levels of the classes? My home studio teacher says try a class that is lower than what you unusually take, so I would probably be taking beginner classes. How are they? Do they move very quickly, are the teachers helpful with corrections?
Thanks!!

We will be there next week as well! My D is a rising HS senior and she has taken classes at both BDC and Steps. She prefers BDC, but both are great. She has taken tap, jazz, ballet, and leaps and turns, and musical theater there before. She has been dancing since she was 4, so she takes mostly advanced classes. My younger D is 12 and has also taken classes there in jazz, contemporary, and hip hop. She has been dancing for 7 years and took beginner classes, and one adv beginner. The adv beginner was a bit overwhelming for her, but she hung in there and the teacher was very good to her.

The first time they went, they did the same thing your teacher suggested and took classes one level down than what they would usually take and were both very comfortable in the class.

Have fun!

Thank you so much! I’m going to give beginner ballet and jazz a try. Does anyone have teacher recommendations for BDC?

For Ballet definitely do beginner, but if you would like a challenge try the advanced beginner for Jazz. I always enjoy my time there and all the teachers are pretty great, just try more for times and make sure that you’re there earlier because it is your first time going.

Thanks! Any other advice you’d give a first timer?

I just thought of another question- is it possible to attend back to back classes? Meaning, is there enough time to run from one class to another?

For first time, just be very respectful and professional. Listen to all corrections even if not for you, follow directions and do what is told, don’t slack off or talk. I’m assuming you wouldn’t, but I went once during spring break and there were these girls who weren’t very well behaved and should not of went to the class. I only have taken one class when I have gone. I mean you never know if a class will end late and you might be very tired after a class. Try calling the studio maybe to ask.

Yes, you can do back to back classes.

BDC is wonderful. They have such a variety of classes. The teachers are amazing and really seem to care about the kids. They offer support, correction and encouragement. One told my dd never to give up her dream, that she had something there to share with others. It gave her such a boost. She is now a junior in college majoring in dance.

texasdancer - did you go? What classes did you take? My D took a beginning jazz class on tuesday at 6 with her friend.

I did go! On monday I took basic ballet with Joy somebody (can’t remember last name) at 3:00, and beginner ballet with Dorit Koppel at 4:30. I LOVED ms koppels class. She was so kind and encouraging and gave wonderful corrections.

On Tuesday I took jazz at 12 with heather Riggs. It was not my favorite class. We spent a long time on warm up, which didn’t really help with technique that much, and then we rushed through a combo that was a little… Provocative for my taste? A few of her comments were to “dance like a tranny” and “do a slutty pose” and things like that. I just wasn’t feeling it.

Overall I had a really good experience at BDC! Really enjoyed my ballet classes, and jazz wasn’t terrible, just not my fave!
