Anyone taken CompSci? Help please!

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone would like to share their experiences about taking a Computer Science class at NYU. I'm thinking about taking the intro class and was wondering if it was hard or time consuming or if I should forget the idea completely and pick another subject as a minor if I have absolutely NO experience in the subject whatsoever. Any advising about teachers? I'm picking between Korth, Engel, and Marateck.

My coworker was a cs major at nyu and he though the program wasn’t that bad. I’m doing a double major of finance/cs and I don’t forsee too much difficulty in the cs portion. Look up the professors in the cas eval guide and ratemyprofessor

the only thing i wonder is what your primary major is, if you’re looking at CS as a minor. if you’re looking to add it to your “marketable skills”, i don’t know if a CS -minor- would be enough experience to really make a difference.

I’m planning to co-major in Finance and Accounting. What minor would you think would add to my ‘marketable skills’?

a language. having advanced proficiency of a second language can really help on your resume. i’m not sure what the language requirement is for Stern. if you can fit in a language minor, that will look much better than a CS minor, in my opinion. it doesn’t have to be some insanely hard language such as Chinese. even a romance language looks good.

my adviser told me this. i’m actually trying to prolong my time at NYU and i’m thinking of picking up a language minor so i can stay here longer. :-P

Thanks! I’ll definitely consider a language minor as I’m already fluent in Mandarin and French.

Hey there–I’m a CS major at NYU so I’m fairly familiar with the program. It’s considerably small compared to other major universities and I often feel as though there is a greater emphasis put on the Graduate division, but it’s also quite good. Classes are medium sized (about 30), and the introductory professors are mostly good (if you want specific recommendations, pm me). Electives vary year to year, but this past semester I took iPhone Programming, which was very cool, and I know they’re going to continue offering that.

In terms of the introductory class, I didn’t actually take it, as I passed out of it via AP’s…but one of my friends who is a minor did and he seemed to really enjoy it (he had Prof. Korth). If you have a knack for computers, you should have absolutely no problem with it. If it were me, I’d go to a couple lectures and see what you think–and then make your decision. I love CS, so I’m biased, but I think everyone should take at least one course in it. You’ll understand so much more about logic and computers.

Also, I appreciate what Miss American Pie says about ‘marketable skills,’ but honestly you should learn what fascinates you and what will broaden your horizons. If you’re already fluent in two languages, try learning a computer language! They’re much different.
