Hello all! Trying to get the lowdown on LFC from anyone that has attended, will attend or knows people that have attended. It’s on my radar for my senior son. Not necessarily on his yet due to the size. Only 1600 kids which is small to him. He will be doing an overnight in February so he can get a better feel and knock it off the list or keep it on the short list.
His first two choices are University of Illinois and Marquette. All three schools are very different but each have a good reason for being on the list. He has Asperger’s so a good fit and proximity to home over the reputation of the school have been the key factors in our search. Lake Forest is small and close to home so it certainly has it’s advantages. Supposedly, it is also quite diverse. Another plus if it is true. Most LACs are tough as they do not offer his major…Journalism. LFC offers a major in Communications and a minor in journalism. It’s proximity to Chicago also give them some good connections for internships close to home. Most of the other LACs that we have LOVED do not offer his major so this one has stayed don the list. The cost is way too high these days so that has become an important factor as we come to the end of our search journey.
Marquette is the perfect size and also close to home. He has been accepted into their honors program so he can live that living community which is a big plus. They are also rolling out a program for kids with ASD. It does cost an additional $6,000 per year but worth the additional resources for him. He would be the guinea pig but the numbers will probably be small first year out so he there will be more resources avail. He did an overnight in the fall and it did not sway him one way or another. We will be attended an admitted students day for Honors kids in early April so we’ll see how that goes.
Illinois is obviously quite large but has it’s advantages. Newman hall is a Catholic conservative dorm which would work for his personality. It is a private dorm so they will clean your room and sheets every week. He has serious executive functioning skills so this is a big perk (they also have laundry service if it comes to that). U of I also has a program for kids on the spectrum that has been in place for over 20 years (on paper, i couldn’t have written up a better program myself). No surprise with all of the engineering and CS kids on campus. It comes at no additional cost which both an advantage and a disadvantage. At least if I am paying the extra fee, someone has to be held accountable for the extra money I would be shelling out. Anyone know anyone that has used this at UIUC?? We will be attending an admitted student day for his college in early April as well.
Any info on any of the above is most appreciated:)
