Since I'm done with one week of AP/IB exams (2 IB down, 2 IB + 2 AP to go), I'm kinda looking forward. Are there any duke students on CC who'd like to tell about their experience in Focus or any other pre-frosh thinking of Focus?

As a premed, I'm looking at the genome, global health, or neuroscience Focus programs. I've heard of freshmen who went to Turkey last year at Blue Devil Days and that global health has gone to Africa in past years. That's really cool if I could have a freshman experience like that.

i did focus this past year and i would encourage others to do it as well. personally i did the law, culture, and cognitive science one and had a really good neuroscience and language course in my cluster. focus is a really good way to transition into college because you make some friends in an academic setting that also live in your dorm. its just 2 classes and a lunch or dinner session thats pass/fail. nothing much too it. plus all the focus classes are usually really good and knock out requirements as well. if you have any specific questions let me know.

my son did focus and is still tight with everyone in that group. he did a focus that was completely social sciences plus art history and writing and law components and one of his dear FOCUS friends will be going to a top 20 med school…not a problem there…he was accepted to many great med schools. Don’t quit FOCUS if you don’t get genome is my point…you have four years to do uber science and research. My son’s FOCUS class was incredible…and they still see each other, went abroad, visited each other in various locations abroad later and attended the funeral together of one of the Professor Emeritus quality lecturers they had the privilege of knowing this way. Many courses are taught by the best Duke teachers in the college who will help you understand their specialization even if you never take another course in their department. FOCUS is where Duke feels like Pomona for a semester in my opinion…but you still have all of East campus for friendship, your roommate is not in your FOCUS program…and it is so not claustrophobic…the dinners are a nice touch for the joint lectures…they graduate this weekend…and tonight the seniors are at a Back at East party reminiscing…

My D did the genome focus; a religion and a public policy class. Her public policy class was her favorite that semester, and she’d never HEARD of public policy before. Had a pancake breakfast with the religion teacher a semester later.

Is it really possible to do Focus with engineering? They say it is but I heard that there was a 4.5 credit max/ semester for freshman. So, if I have to take three credits (calc, chem, basic engineering) for engineering first semester, how is it possible to take 2.5 Focus credits on top of that?
Any thoughts? I’m just confused.

if you have legitimate worries about your requirements, send an email to an advisor in Pratt. Or to Dr. G…Michael Gustafson who sometimes posts on this board.
good luck with getting your info to make a decision.

for those of you who want FOCUS, I would suggest putting effort in your essays…and being open to more than one FOCUS as a great outcome for first semester.

i am considering about it.
but i have a question here (very stupid one indeed…)
where can i get my 7-digit access code (i’m an international)?
i followed the tip and found a series of numbers on the top center of the reply form, but it is 8-digit…i cannot find any numbers in the third paragraph of my application confirmation, deposit confirmation(internationals do not need to pay this!), or in other places mentioned.
can anyone help me out?
i should call the office but before that i want to figure out what the 8-digit code is…
thanks ;)

Sent in my stuff yesterday. Global health, neuroscience, genome, evolution. Hope I get in one, and maybe one in an awesome dorm On to housing stuff…
