hi! anyone applying to dickinson RD? I haven't visited yet, and I don't know much about it other than what i've read in brochures and online...I don't know anyone who goes there. Has anyone been to the campus?

in terms of stats...I'm a 3.6 W/1450 (800V 650M). Decent extracurriculars, but nothing really special; good recs and essay I think. I'm not sure how selective the school is, though.

My S and I visited Dickinson this past summer and will be returning in February so that he can do an overnight with one of the teams. We both thought Dickinson was very attractive. Impressive limestone buildings, a beautiful library, a well-maintained campus. The athletic facilities, while not the best we have seen, appeared to well-maintained also. The campus is small, buildings are close together with little open space.

Even though Carlisle is a small town, it is a county seat and quite busy. Dickinson, which is sandwiched between the business district and a residential neighborhood, has a "bustle" to it, as though it was in a small city. It is easy to walk downtown to shops and restaurants so the campus doesn't feel as small as it really is.

Hi. I can tell you first hand about d'son. It is really a great place... but only for certain people. What do you want to study? that is key. I'm transferring--not because I don't love the school but because they do not have the programs that I want. I really love dickinson. It is a great school and I have met really great ppl. I think I've made more friends at d'son during my first semester than i did all of high school. The people are great; the profs are pretty good... depending on what you're studying of course and the campus is absolutely gorgeous. Carlisle is kind of a bummer.... while it is cute and a nice little town-- unless you're over 21 and can go to the bars... then you're kind of out of luck. For freshman the highlights are the movie theatre and the walmart... but harrisburg is nearby which is nice and there are shuttles there on the weekend if you don't have a car or a ride. anyway, i really like it and i wish i wasn't transferring but i have to for a long story of reasoning. anyway... if you want small liberal arts and a nice community feeling--def. worth a look. and honestly you're grades and scores look great.... you'll get in no prob. any questions feel free to email me: timms@dickinson.edu hope i helped you out!

When you say it's a great place depending on what you study, how does Poli Sci and Economics fit in there? I think it's fairly good from what I've heard, but still wanted to ask. Also, what about finaid? Given their price tag, there needs to be a good finaid package if my ds gets in.

Dickinson's largest merit aid scholarship is the John Dickinson scholarship, $15,000 per year. There is also the Benjamin Rush scholarship, $12,500. Lots of kids get these, I believe about 20%. They will supplement those with need-based aid, including grants. I think it is going to depend on how much they want you child (and I'm basically talking about them looking at the numbers). If you have moderate need, as we did, and a desireable student, you might get a package that pays about half of the total cost (pushing $40,000/yr including books and expenses) in scholarships and grants. As with any other school, the remainder could be work study (say 1500/yr for pocket money), loans and parents/students out of pocket. I don't know how much higher they might go in awarding grants to students who have greater need, and/or were more desireable, say for diversity. So it isn't exactly a full ride school, but it can and does compete favorably with the better state universities. In other words, they can make it as affordable to go there as it would be to go to your state U, if they really want you. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info CLdad. He has applied EA, so hopefully we'll hear something in the next month. It was my understanding that they may also be able to give finaid info at that time too. We've done the CSS, but still need to get the FAFSA in.

I'm applying to Dickinson RD. 3.5 GPA, lots of ECs (president of two clubs, study abroad, etc.), 1330 (660 V, 670 M), 30 ACT. Also applying for ROTC at Dickinson in case my attempt to getting into one of the service academies doesn't go too well. I visited Carlisle, and it's a pretty neat place. Dorms looked sorta crappy but the town looked pretty good.

I want to do ROTC at Dickinson too (if I don't get into my top choice) - I know you have to apply to Monroe or something if you want a scholarship (I think the deadline for a four-year was Jan. 1st though, I'll probably just get a two or three year to help out with the costs) but to enroll in ROTC at any college I thought you just applied normally to the college and once you get there you enroll in the military science and leadership courses, as well as the program itself...

skirbyy.... i think you have a really good chance of getting in... as for ROTC..i honestly don't know anything about it. as for the dorms... i'm in a really nice dorm.. i know that some of them are kind of old... but i think that it's sort of a luck of the draw kind of thing. The buildings are beautiful tho. Good luck. let me know if you have any more questions.

choff... for economics and poli sci you're fine. my roommate is a poli sci major and she's doing really well. my freshman seminar was a poli sci class and i really liked the prof. the reason i'm transferring is i'm pre-veterinary and d'son's biology department isn't what i want. i like the profs and the classes are okay but not for pre-vet. pre-med maybe. hope this helps.

I've applied to Dickinson RD. I haven't visited it, but it seems like a good school from what I know about it. I live in Japan, but most of my relatives live in Pennsylvania, so that is a merit. Also, its global focus interested me. My test scores and GPA are good. My extracurricular activities are pretty much limited to sports--my school started six years ago, and is working to make more activities, but I've basically only been involved in sports. I'm not sure that I could go to this school even if I were to be accepted because of the costs.

Josiedog33, thanks for the info. S was deferred on EA, so he's still waiting now till April. He needs to decide if he wants to try hard enough to get more information in to them, to help. OTOH, unless the finan aide package is extremely good, it's doubtful if it's in the running anyway.

I got my letter today in the mail.. I was accepted. My stats: SAT I: 1370 (730 V, 640 M), SAT II: 690 Lit, 750 Writing, 650 Math IC, GPA (W)- 4.2-ish, AP Psych- 5, in the IB program (diploma candidate) Good recs, really great essays (I think, at least)... lacrosse & soccer- varsity letters: 7, ice hockey statistican, web designer w/ own internet business, Peer Leadership program, lots of lacrosse ECs, 100+ hours of community service/year, and more ECs....

I was offered the $15,000/year scholarship (I never even asked for financial aid, I have no problem paying)... also, I got a $3,000 grant for research with the President of the school and all these research opportunities w/ the President.. pretty cool actually.

I got accepted to Lehigh, University of Richmond, and Hamilton... Waitlisted at Haverford & Davidson, and rejected from Williams (kinda bummed)... I was deferred early decision from Dartmouth... (that's my #1)....

I know NOTHING about Dickinson.. just that it has an awesome library and I can have all these research opportunities (I'm really big on research- psychology)... can someone tell me more about it?

I got into Dickinson RD. Got my stuff today.
