Hi everybody!
I'm an intl from Bulgaria, applied to the double-degree program with the conservatory(voice department) and was rejected. Those who have applied to the conservatory, and especially with singing, could you please share your impressions - do they accept accomplished talents? What songs did you prepare?
thanx

A daughter's friend was rejected there. She is a very accomplished soprano, she went to both all-state and all-Eastern choir this year, she goes to at least one selective summer camp for singing each year including the one at Oberlin this past summer, both her parents are full-time professional musicians, and she had a very impressive pre-audition CD but she did not even get invited for a live audition. I know she sang Batti, Batti from Don Giovanni. I am not sure what else was on her CD.

I heard some singers warming up at the December auditions and they sounded quite good, although I would have thought my daughter's friend was in the same league.

Another accomplished soprano here! I too was rejected from the voice department after they received my pre-audition CD. I'm a soprano, and I recorded Faure's "Chanson d'Amour" and Samuel Barber's "Sure on This Shining Night".

Oberlin is one of the most popular places for voice, at least according to reputation; when I spoke to the admissions director, he informed me that there were over 200 female singers alone duking it out for a few choice spots. The competition is stiff, even among the best singers in the country. But what else can one expect from a school that accepted talents like Renee Fleming and Denyce Graves in the past?

I'm a violinist, I applied to the con as well as the college. But I'm one of 300 violinists, so I don't think the letter I get tomorrow will be an acceptance.

Oberlin is one of the coolest places I've ever been. the atmosphere is totally relaxed and not cutthroat at all. Voice is really really hard to get into though. I have a friend who is an amazing singer who was deferred from early review and he thinks he'll be rejected despite having "sung his best".

Last year at this time my D was considering Oberlin conservatory vs. Lawrence. She chose the latter for their double-degree program in voice and liberal arts and is very happy. She liked Oberlin's conservatory and the teacher but did not feel comfortable with the rest of the community and the limited choices for electives. Oberlin's double degree is difficult to coordinate while Lawrence's is entirely integrated and supported by two advisors, guidelines, etc.. However, as many other posters have noted on this and other CC forums, choice and availability of a teacher you feel comfortable with for your voice, instrument - as well as the overall music/liberal arts environment -- should be paramount in your final decision on where to enroll. Hope this helps -- good luck!!!!

I was accepted into and will be attending the Oberlin Conservatory vocal program. I sang Purcell's Sweeter than Roses and Mozart's Un moto di gioia at the audition. I have heard fabulous things about the program and the teachers!! does anyone know anything about the Northwestern vocal program?? I have been offered a lot of money by them.
